The Director of International Tax Planning will play a key leadership role in developing and executing the firm’s global tax strategy, with a focus on U.S. outbound operations. This position partners closely with business lines, legal, finance, and external advisors to provide strategic tax guidance on cross-border activities, including restructurings, M&A transactions, and ongoing operational planning. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in U.S. international tax, strong business acumen, and the ability to translate complex tax concepts into actionable strategies that align with the organization’s financial and regulatory objectives.

We’re seeking a future team member for the role of Director to join our Corporate Tax  team. This role is located in New York City.

In this role, you’ll make an impact in the following ways: 

•              Lead international tax planning initiatives related to U.S. outbound investments, financing structures, and global operations.

•              Advise business units on tax-efficient structuring of new products, market expansions, and legal entity reorganizations.

•              Provide tax support on mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and joint ventures, including due diligence, structuring, and integration planning.

•              Develop and implement effective tax rate (ETR) optimization strategies consistent with regulatory and reputational considerations.

•              Oversee modeling and analysis of tax implications for proposed transactions and strategic initiatives.

•              Manage foreign tax credit (FTC) planning, utilization, and optimization across jurisdictions.

•              Partner with transfer pricing teams to ensure alignment between tax planning strategies and intercompany pricing policies.

•              Support global tax controversy matters, including audit defense, responses to tax authority inquiries, and negotiation of settlements.

•              Monitor and assess the impact of changes in U.S. and foreign tax laws (e.g., Subpart F, GILTI, BEAT, OECD Pillar Two) on the firm’s operations.

•              Collaborate with accounting teams on tax provision implications (ASC 740) of planning strategies and transactions.

•              Drive implementation of tax planning strategies, ensuring proper documentation, governance, and operational execution.

•              Manage relationships with external advisors, including law firms and Big 4 accounting firms.


To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following: 

Qualifications

•              Education: Juris Doctor (JD) required; LLM in Taxation preferred. CPA a plus.

•              Experience: 10+ years of relevant experience in international tax, including a combination of Big 4 accounting firm, law firm, and/or in-house financial services experience.

•              Strong expertise in U.S. international tax rules, including Subpart F, GILTI, FDII, BEAT, and foreign tax credit regimes.

•              Demonstrated experience advising on cross-border restructurings and M&A transactions.

•              Experience in the financial services or banking industry strongly preferred.

•              Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment.

•              Sound judgment and high ethical standards, particularly in managing tax risk and reputational considerations.

•              Acts as a trusted advisor to senior business and finance leaders.

•              Leads cross-functional initiatives involving tax, legal, finance, and operations teams.

•              Contributes to the development of the firm’s global tax strategy and governance framework.

•              Mentors junior team members and helps build internal tax capabilities.

BNY assesses market data to ensure a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base salary for this position is expected to be between $155,000 and $250,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNY total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and Company-sponsored benefit programs. 
This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
