Who We Are

The Farmer’s Dog is the fastest growing pet health service company in the US, and was born from a mission to change the landscape of pet health, providing dogs and their humans with honest, smart, and simple care – a fresh proposition in an industry riddled with manipulative and misleading marketing. We’re starting by radically improving the $100 billion pet food market, replacing bulk bags of highly-processed pellets with a personalized subscription service that sends healthy, freshly-made dog food, balanced by top veterinary nutritionists, directly to customers’ doors. Our ultimate goal is to create innovative, honest, and delightful experiences across all aspects of pet care, and we believe our direct-to-consumer business model, holistic approach to growth, and dynamic and forward-thinking culture uniquely position us to shepherd this backwards industry into the future.

To date, The Farmer’s Dog has delivered hundreds of millions of meals nationwide and raised over $150M in funding to help us build a company as healthy as the dogs who are eating those meals. Join us as we continue to develop ways of bringing peace of mind to our customers, health to their companions, and much-needed change to the way people feed and care for their pets.

A tech note: technology has been and will continue to be at the core of how we are going to build the future above. We think that a small, resource-constrained, but creative and free team can accomplish more than a large, bloated, unconstrained, bureaucratic one. We focus on both the what (what problems are we solving) and the how (how are we going about solving such problems) and as a leader you should be striking a balance between the two. We are accelerating our pace of innovation and are on the brink of massive industry-changing new disruptions that will continue to improve the lives of millions of pets, pet owners, and pet care professionals.

A financial note: We are also doing great financially, are bigger than you think (delivered hundreds of millions of meals, but we don’t disclose our numbers), we sell a real product for more than we buy it for. You know, like a real business. We are not waiting for a magical moment in the future to be sustainable. We are fiscally prudent and we have never bitten more than we could chew. We have raised over $150MM where others have deployed more than a billion to reach a similar size.

Join us as we continue to develop ways of bringing peace of mind to our customers, health to their companions, and much-needed change to the way people feed and care for their pets.

What We Stand For

Our best ideas and competitive advantages come from direct engagement and understanding of our customers.

Customer obsession: you will be living in quantum entanglement with your customers. You’ll breathe their air, walk in their shoes. You’ll establish mechanisms to make sure your partners do the same

Work small, but with a big vision: you work small and are able to work with the design and engineering teams on small iterations. Over time you’ll develop, in partnership with our vet partners, a compelling vision that can be shared internally and broadly to develop

Data-driven decision-making: We use first principles and are skeptical. We establish context. It’s paramount to have confidence in your data, being able to analyze it, and tease out noise from signals.

Problem focused development: you focus on teasing apart the key customer problems and pain points, but let solutions emerge through synchronous, streamlined work with a diverse pool of colleagues.

Execute for impact: We are responsible for the growth of the business and the perception of our brand. We are resilient, accountable and relentless.

One team mentality: we don’t advance our careers by withholding information, we are honest and transparent even when it’s embarrassing, we seek the truth deeply and aren’t afraid to challenge leadership and the status quo. We deliver feedback in the moment and directly (nicely) as that’s the main way to all row toward the shared goal.

Where You'll Come In

We have big ambitions, our mission is to give dog lovers true peace of mind by helping them do the best for their dogs – this will require us to completely reimagine how we care for our dogs and drive meaningful shifts in an industry that is desperate for change.

That’s why we’re looking for an experienced Director of Data and Analytics Engineering to oversee building production facing tools and work directly with data customers to support analytics and reporting needs. You will lead the vision, strategy and execution to enable data scientists, data analysts, and product teams to create and access information at a massive scale, and you will have opportunities to develop new data tools from the ground up. You know when to leverage existing tools instead of reinventing wheels.  If you have a passion for building and maintaining high quality code, and want to improve how The Farmer’s Dog makes strategic decisions at the company level, then this is the team for you!

How You'll Make An Impact

  • Define and execute the vision, roadmap and strategy for the Data Engineering and Analytics Engineering group
  • Lead our Data Engineers and Analytics Engineers by providing career growth, support and effective feedback
  • Mentor Data Engineers and Analytics Engineers on production level code that processes millions of events per day using core Python & SQL

  • Consistently evaluate our data ingestion, modeling and transformation practices for scale
  • Partner cross-functionally with stakeholders across the business to understand their needs and proactively identify solutions that enable them to extract insights and value from our data
  • Build and scale data orchestration services that support complex analysis across The Farmer’s Dog
  • Own data quality for crucial systems and serve as a primary resource for data expertise
  • Define and manage SLAs for datasets that support production services
  • Design and implement tooling for access management, monitoring, data controls, and self-service ETL/Analytics pipelines
  • Be a thought partner to Product, Engineering, and key partners at the Farmer’s Dog in designing data at source systems

We're Excited About You Because

  • 8+ years working in either a data or software engineering related field
  • 5+ years working with Data directly
  • 5+ years of people management experience; developing, growing and performance managing a team
  • 2+ years of recent experience working with GCP / AWS
  • Familiar with patterns and architectures involved in ingestion, transformation, queueing, and querying of terabytes of data
  • Ability to put together an entire ETL pipeline from scratch without assistance
  • Familiar with Rest API concepts
  • Strong SQL and No-SQL experience
  • Expert in Python who is comfortable working in a production environment
  • Experience working with dbt, airflow, or similar data processing tools
  • Solid data modeling skills
  • Proactively explore our data for new, undiscovered anomalies in both existing and new datasets. Automating ways to identify/capture data quality issues
  • High energy and action-oriented with a passion for getting things done in complex environments
  • Strong architectural experience working at scale
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Comfortable in both scrappy and sophisticated work environments.
