This role will oversee the team responsible for building and maintaining aspects of MLB's core platform, which serves millions of fans across multiple lines of the business.

We are looking for a dynamic technology manager who can take on complex challenges while fostering a culture of engineering and operational excellence. As Director, you will help scale and guide engineering teams while remaining hands-on, assisting with the platform's design and architecture. We are looking to make transformational changes to our identity platform, and this role will lead the build and maintenance of a modern platform. You will cultivate a deep understanding of our day-to-day fan identity domain while partnering with business stakeholders and product managers to facilitate the design and implementation of new engaging features for our users.

Additionally, this role will focus on building necessary controls from a security, fraud, and compliance perspective, while ensuring a high-throughput, low-latency, best-in-class experience for MLB fans. If you are passionate about building identity platforms and if you love the world of Baseball, this will be an excellent opportunity for you!

  • Architectural Vision: Define the technical vision and architectural roadmap for the Fan Identity platform while driving it toward a modern, resilient, and cloud-native system
  • Full Stack Ownership: Provide technical direction, oversight, and hands-on development of the entire Fan Identity stack, from client-side SDKs (mobile and web) to core back-end services built on technologies like Java and Spring Boot
  • Cloud & Infrastructure: Work with the team in adopting DevOps and SRE best practices. Direct infrastructure-as-code efforts using Terraform, manage container orchestration with Kubernetes, and optimize global performance via CDNs and Cloud Infrastructure
  • Operational Excellence: Establish and monitor rigorous Service Level Objectives (SLOs) for system performance, availability, and security. Lead incident response and continuous improvement efforts

People Management & Mentorship

  • Talent Development: Recruit, mentor, coach, and grow a team of software engineers at all levels. Facilitate career growth, conduct performance reviews, and champion a culture of technical ownership
  • Team Culture: Cultivate a strong, collaborative engineering culture centered on accountability, technical excellence, and the ability to thrive in an agile, fast-paced environment
  • Empowerment: Delegate effectively, provide clear direction and context, and empower team leads to drive technical decisions within their domains

Program Management & Execution

  • Execution & Delivery: Own the execution of complex technical programs and projects related to the Fan Identity platform, ensuring timely delivery against the roadmap
  • Risk Mitigation: Proactively identify technical, operational, and security risks across the program and develop and implement effective mitigation strategies
  • Agile Leadership: Drive efficiency within an agile development framework, ensuring precise planning, estimation, and execution of sprints and quarterly goals
  • Vendor Management: Manage technical evaluation and integration of external CIAM tools and services, ensuring vendor roadmaps align with MLB's strategic needs

Product Management Partnership

  • Strategic Alignment: Serve as the key technical partner to InfoSec and Product orgs, translating fan user experiences (e.g., fast login, new registration methods) into sound, secure, and scalable technical requirements
  • Security Focus: Work with InfoSec and Product orgs to prioritize initiatives that mitigate fraud, enhance authentication (MFA, passwordless), and ensure compliance with data privacy regulations
  • Roadmap Influence: Provide engineering leadership and guidance to inform the product roadmap while advocating for platform health, security enhancements, and the adoption of emerging technical and identity standards

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or comparable field of study, and/or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of experience leading and managing software engineering teams, preferably for high-scale, consumer-facing applications

  • 5+ years serving as lead or architect of software development projects
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in Consumer Identity and Access Management (CIAM) or Identity and Access Management (IAM), with deep knowledge of protocols like OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and SAML
  • Strong technical background in Java/Spring Boot development and architecting distributed systems

Preferred Qualifications
