The Director of UI/UX is a senior design leader responsible for setting and executing a modern, customer-centered design vision across Pager Health’s product experiences, including web and mobile interfaces, conversational AI experiences (chat and voice), and emerging agentic, LLM-powered interactions. This role sits on the Product team and leads a team of Product Designers, shaping how our platform looks, feels, sounds, and behaves for members, providers, and internal users.
This individual will combine deep expertise in UI and UX with strong leadership and strategic thinking. They will be opinionated about design quality, proactive in raising the bar, and relentless about creating intuitive, elegant, and modern front-end experiences. The Director of UI/UX will partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, and other stakeholders to ensure design is a core driver of product strategy and customer value.
The ideal candidate is excited about the role AI can play in design workflows and product experiences, stays current on emerging tools and patterns, and is deeply customer centric in how they approach problem solving.
Responsibilities:
- Design Strategy & Vision: Define and evolve a cohesive UI and UX strategy that aligns with Pager Health’s product vision
- and business goals. Establish a modern, scalable design system and visual language that elevates the overall product experience.
- Conversational & AI Experience Design
- Define and lead the design of natural language, conversational user experiences, including chatbot interactions, agentic AI workflows, and AI-supported telephonic conversations with members and providers.
- Establish best practices for conversation design, including dialogue flows, tone, turn-taking, error handling, escalation to humans, and recovery from misunderstanding.
- Partner closely with Product, Engineering, Clinical, and AI teams to ensure AI-driven experiences are clear, trustworthy, safe, and aligned with clinical and operational realities.
- Ensure conversational and AI experiences are coherent with screen-based UX, creating seamless, cross-channel journeys across human and AI touchpoints.
- Advocate for ethical, inclusive, and transparent AI experiences, especially in high-stakes healthcare contexts.
Design Leadership & Team Development: Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Product Designers. Set clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and foster a culture of craft excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Customer-Centered Design: Champion a user-first mindset across the Product organization. Ensure customer insights, usability research, and feedback are central to design decisions. Advocate for simple, intuitive solutions to complex healthcare problems.
Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product Management, Engineering, Data, and Client-facing teams to translate product requirements into thoughtful, high-quality design solutions. Influence roadmaps and priorities through strong design rationale and storytelling.
Execution & Quality: Oversee the end-to-end design process from discovery and ideation through delivery and iteration. Maintain a high bar for UI polish, UX clarity, accessibility, conversation quality, and consistency across all front-end and AI-mediated experiences, including voice and chat interactions.
Modernization & Innovation: Be aggressive in modernizing the look and feel of Pager Health’s front end. Stay current on design trends, interaction patterns, and best practices, and thoughtfully apply them where they add value.
AI & Design Tools: Explore, evaluate, and adopt AI-powered design tools and workflows that improve speed, quality, and creativity. Collaborate with Product and Engineering to design, prototype, and evolve AI-driven product experiences, including conversational and agentic interactions, ensuring they meet high standards for usability, trust, and user understanding.
Design Systems & Standards: Own and evolve design systems, component libraries, and documentation to ensure scalability and efficiency across teams. Partner with Engineering to ensure strong implementation and alignment.
Measurement & Impact: Define and track success metrics related to usability, engagement, and customer satisfaction. Use data and feedback to continuously refine and improve the product experience.
Qualifications:
· 8+ years of experience in UI and UX design, with significant experience leading product design teams.
· Proven ability to define and execute a modern design strategy for complex, customer-facing products.
· Deep expertise in UI design, UX principles, interaction design, and usability best practices.
· Experience designing or partnering on conversational user experiences, such as chatbots, voice assistants, IVR systems, or AI-mediated workflows.
· Understanding of the unique UX challenges of voice, conversation, and AI-driven interactions, including ambiguity, trust, error recovery, and handoff to humans.
· Experience applying behavioral economics principles to design user experiences that influence decision-making in complex, high-stakes environments, such as healthcare, including the use of nudges, framing, and cognitive load reduction across digital and conversational interactions.
· Strong people leadership skills with experience mentoring and developing designers at multiple levels.
· Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with Product and Engineering partners in fast-paced environments.
· Strong customer empathy and a track record of designing experiences grounded in real user needs.
· Hands-on familiarity with modern design tools, prototyping methods, and design systems.
· High interest in AI and emerging design technologies, with a willingness to experiment and innovate.
· Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to articulate design decisions and influence stakeholders.
· Experience in healthcare or regulated industries is a plus
For Colorado, Nevada, New York, and Washington DC-based employment: In accordance with the Pay Transparency laws the pay range for this position is $200,000 to $235,000. The compensation package may include stock options, plus a range of medical, dental, vision, financial, generous PTO, stipends for professional development, and wellness benefits. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate's relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. The range listed only applies to Colorado, Nevada, New York, and Washington DC.
