Editorial Assistant, The New Yorker

The New Yorker seeks an editorial assistant to support the magazine’s editorial director, working across the print and digital departments. This person will assist with administrative tasks and help work on nonfiction pieces, which may include reported features, reviews and critical essays, and commentary. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities:

  • Completing administrative tasks, including filing paperwork related to writers’ assignments, payment, and travel.

  • Conducting research for writers, often on deadline, and inputting editorial changes and helping to coördinate closings.

  • Reading and responding to articles as they come in, offering comments about reporting, narrative, structure, focus, tone, language, and length.

  • Helping to coördinate The New Yorker’s books coverage, including communicating with publishers and tracking forthcoming titles, galleys, and related materials.

  • Assessing pitches from freelance writers and generating ideas for stories.

  • Miscellaneous editorial tasks, which may include writing display and social copy, editing material such as The Mail or Contributors pages, and working on multimedia projects.

  • Assisting senior editorial staff in a range of responsibilities, including the curation of story ideas and the coordination of partnerships with outside organizations.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • At least a year and a half of editorial or reporting experience.

  • Highly organized and attentive to detail.

  • Engaged, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable about politics and cultural matters.

  • Familiarity with The New Yorker’s distinctive style and diverse contents.

  • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $64,500 - $65,250. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
