We are excited to invite a passionate and dedicated Education Specialist to join our team! Homes for the Homeless (HFH) is searching for an experienced Education Specialist for our Families w/ Children facility in the Soundview area of the Bronx, NY. As the Education Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in our organization in supporting the quality of an afterschool program that promotes academic achievement while also providing a fun and safe space for vulnerable kids. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals who are interested in working with students ages 5–16 in a dynamic environment outside the traditional classroom setting. ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS:

Homes for the Homeless operates shelters for families experiencing homelessness in NYC. Our family residences are more than just a place to sleep. Families can make the most of their stay through accessing an array of onsite programs. Many of these programs are also available to people living in the local community. Our goal is to have a positive impact so families can thrive long after they leave our shelters.


 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create recreational and academic curriculum/lesson plans that supports NYCDOE school-day curriculum.
  • Promote positive impactful learning with program participants.
  • Infuse STEM based learning in lesson plans and ensure all structured activities have clearly defined outcomes (measurable skill gains and/or learning goals for participants).
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with parents, school administrators and personnel.
  • Responsible for recruiting program participants within Family Residence and Community.
  • Monitor/track daily attendance and create attendance initiatives as needed. 
  • Lead engaging activities with program participants. 
  • Nurture a fun/safe environment within the classroom.
  • Participate in staff meetings, conferences, and training.
  • Perform other duties and tasks assigned.



QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Highschool Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field preferred.
  • Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development and implementation of structured programming.
  • At least two years of experience working in an afterschool program for children ages 5-16.
  • Kind, creative and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the afterschool program team. 
  • Must be flexible and willing to adapt to schedule changes.
  • Must be willing to consent to a multi-stage background investigation. 
  • Bilingual in English/Spanish, preferred.
