Getting together with real people in real life makes powerful things happen. Side hustles become careers, ideas become movements, and chance encounters become lifelong connections. Meetup brings people together to create thriving communities. Show up. Change lives.

Meetup is seeking a Chief Technology Officer to lead our Engineering Organization, which represents about 30% of our employees. Working directly and closely with the CEO, VP Engineering and VP of Product, you’ll play a pivotal role in developing the company's engineering strategy, vision, roadmap, and you will ship products that will spark explosive growth on and off the Meetup platform.

What you’ll do:

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and all execs for the overall vision of Meetup, and a key part of an executive team that is looking to meaningfully evolve our business
  • Collaborate with our current VP of Engineering to lead the replatforming efforts of the business
  • Conceive, explain and accelerate the adoption of an engineering vision promoting fast development iterations during a time of rapid product evolution
  • With your leaders, establish, communicate and iterate on the process for how product, design, and engineering work together to ship the highest quality software and an extraordinary Meetup experience for our customers
  • Through mentorship and management, ensure that all of engineering is making effective decisions on process, execution, architecture and technical strategy, with the appropriate focus on speed/experimentation versus stability/robustness
  • Hold ultimate responsibility for the performance, availability and regulatory compliance of Meetup’s applications and systems
  • Ensure that Meetup’s technical vendors and infrastructure are top-notch and fiscally sensible
  • Speak at conferences and Meetups as a key ambassador for the company

One of our core company values is “trust in transparency”, so we asked our engineers what attributes they are most looking for in a CTO. We are sharing the top key CTO attributes since we want all candidates to understand our culture of deep transparency and to help candidates understand the team’s top priorities. In priority order (% represents % selecting this attribute):

  • Strategic thinker, both technically and for business (65%)
  • Strong people management, coaching, developing, mentoring skills (58%)
  • Focus on diversity (inclusion, belonging, hiring, and retention) within engineering and executive team (51%)
  • Experience running a highly-scaled (millions of users), multi-platform application (42%)
  • Deep technical expertise and insight; knowledgeable and curious (42%)
  • Strong proactive communicator / presenter, engaging (39%)
  • No ego - easy to collaborate with (37%)
  • Change management / leadership skills as leading through change is critical (37%)
  • Experience leading engineering organizations that are both distributed and onsite (35%)
  • Experience building excellent engineering process in $50-100 M + digital business (35%)
  • Strong decision making skills (34%)
  • Experience working in startup/high sense of urgency, ambiguous environment (32%)

You’re the ideal teammate if you also:

  • Deeply embody the majority of the above skills
  • Have 15+ years of experience working in direct-to-consumer and B2B e-commerce, digital subscription or marketplace businesses
  • Have a passion for bringing people together, creating community and changing Lives
  • Have significant experience working on consumer mobile products across web, iOS, and Android
  • Have experience with and passion for building out high-functioning distributed and remote teams
  • Have interest in real change management, not just keeping the lights on
  • A passion for continuously improving the engineering organization’s capacity and capability to iterate quickly, fail fast, and deliver results

This is an exciting time to join as a Meetup executive. After 16 years of leadership by Meetup’s founder, we welcomed a new CEO to the company in 2018. The company has proven remarkably resilient during these challenging times and we are more profitable than at any time in our history. We are also close to six months post acquisition by phenomenal new investors who have infused the company with new ideas, resources and support.  You will be joining the Lead Team in a highly dynamic strategy process that will impact Meetup’s future for years to come.

Our team is bold, supportive, and passionate about bringing people together in real life to create community for everyone.  We care about moving fast, real-world change, and building diverse, dynamic teams. Are you in?

An Insider's view of Meetup

How would you describe the company’s work-life balance?

Meetup promotes a healthy balance and respect around work life, personal life, and family life. It's not simply policy but instead, the culture that lives with all employees (managers and leaders included). Work happens during our traditional business hours.

Harry Chiu

Head of Recruiting

What does your typical day look like?

As an engineer at Meetup, my mission is to build things that help product teams focus on our users and develop our product faster and with better quality. My team mob programs or pair programs by default, which works great for us because it increases code and architecture, knowledge sharing, focus, productivity and team bonding.

Jaclyn Jiménez

Senior Full Stack Engineer

How does the company support your career growth?

I created my own professional development path by participating in the Employee Resource Group and Diversity & Inclusion council. Participating and organizing these company initiatives allowed me to stretch my leadership muscles, understand the value of empathizing with my colleagues, and appreciate the ability to use my voice to influence change.

Lee Upshur

What's something quirky about your company?
