Role Description

Quartet is seeking a world-class executive to lead its Engineering organization reporting to the CTO. This is a senior management role that will further our company growth and exceed the expectations of a talented engineering organization. This person will be responsible for translating the product vision into a development strategy and, eventually, shipped product while putting high quality, high performing systems in place to evaluate process against measurable criteria and objectives.

The VP of Engineering will be responsible for building and leading a product-focused engineering team. They will have experience building a culture of operational excellence and an engineering team that owns their software from design, development, deployment, and production. Quartet is looking for an executive that understands how to run and scale a high growth platform embodied by the utmost in quality while simultaneously building product quickly and iteratively. This will require building and developing a world-class engineering team.


In addition to constantly recruiting and scaling the team, implementing a strong culture of process with emphasis on the highest quality execution will be critical to this leader’s success. A strong appreciation for design/product and the impact it has on success is critical. They should be deeply passionate about the product and help to build and shape the technical vision for the organization. This technical leader must be able to manage the experience on the platform and have a particular expertise at back-end, front-end, server side development, and infrastructure.


They will partner extremely closely with the CTO, Product, and the Engineering teams to shape culture, process, and deliver high quality software to enable Quartet’s mission of identifying and improving the health and lives of people we have the privileged opportunity to help. This VP of Engineering is ideally a great manager and a great team builder.

Professional and Technical Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience leading engineering teams
  • 4 year CS or Engineering degree or equivalent experience
  • Superb communication skills
  • Ability to fluidly execute operationally and strategically
  • Ability to identify and reduce complexity
  • Ability to recruit and retain top technical talent Inspiring leader with the ability to work closely on a technical level with the engineering team
  • Ability to mentor young engineering talent to build a rich team and foster collaboration, good habits, stable code and creative problem solving skills
  • Curiosity, positivity, humility, and a lifelong learner
  • Hands-on experience building and shipping consumer product and implementing effective software development processes to ensure quality and delivery in a high-growth environment
  • Experience as a software engineer at some stage of their career
  • Experience aligning engineering goals with the big picture business and product priorities
  • Ability to be effective at a technology level with backend (we primarily use Java, Postgres, Scala, Spark), front end web development (we use Typescript, React, and node), and Infrastructure and Operations (we use terraform, ansible, docker, and AWS). Specific technologies are less important than experience across the stack
  • Strong operational excellence abilities around instrumenting, monitoring, alarming, and understanding software once it goes to production.

Responsibilities

  • Implement the technological vision and direction for the Quartet platform, and ensure the engineering team is aligned in achieving those outcomes
  • Manage all aspects of Engineering Department staffing, including employee development (career and skill), financial/resource planning, and performance
  • Support and foster the existing energy and morale of the group and foster the continuous improvement culture of the organization to get the most out of the teams
  • Communicate Engineering plans and status throughout all levels of the company
  • Ensure that the Engineering Department delivers consistent, repeatable and cost effective platform and application development
  • Manage the technical aspects of platform and products and their compatibility with the ecosystem/customers’ systems
  • Work closely with product team to understand and anticipate business requirements, help draft and communicate architectural decisions
  • Architect, implement, deploy, and manage at scale, cloud-native web apps and distributed microservices
