Job Description
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Engineering, the Vice President of Transmission Engineering and Operations will drive design and execution of the technologies which are at the backbone of the NBC Sports, Olympics, and Peacock transmission infrastructure. They will have operational and engineering oversight of all areas related to Transmission, Ingest and Digital Encoding systems within the NBC Sports Broadcast Operation Center (BOC).
This position, along with his/her Transmission Engineering Management Team, will interface with clients and various show properties to ensure proper planning and communication. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The oversight of schedules, managing and evolving workflows, procedures and discrepancy reporting. This leader also works closely with Production and Broadcast Operations personnel to oversee Production's execution of live and/or taped content. This includes long range capital and operational cost forecasting, planning, design and documentation of future transmission/technical needs for large sporting events.
  • Maintaining and growing existing and new vendor relationships and work with Corporate Sourcing to seek continued savings opportunities.
  • Continuously improve technical performance and efficiency of the BOC and ensure service interruptions are proactively remedied in a productive manner.
  • Manage the design and creation of standard operating procedures for all transmission technologies activities, which include: audio/video and communications check-in and QC process for remotes, outgoing transmission activity, and ingest. This includes linear Broadcast as well as digital stream creation. Additionally, contributing to workflow simplification and continued cost effective operations will be a key requirement.
  • Lead multiple groups responsible for successful technical operations of a dynamic and fast paced sports production facility. This includes demonstrating the ability to escalate critical transmission and ingest problems quickly and efficiently in order to minimize disruptions and ability to work around failures to mitigate interruptions to the Live productions
  • Ensure that technology is delivered on scalable and reliable platforms that will meet business requirements and can seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and systems


Qualifications
Basic Requirements:

  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant Television production and engineering experience with at least 7 years of direct management experience of technical engineering and operations teams.
  • Experience with technical management of complex systems. This includes operational detail and developing process-oriented approaches to technical operations
  • Experience with broadcast television engineering operations and project management experience
  • Must have knowledge of carrier network terminology and technologies, fiber optic technologies and coax transport, IP network design and operating flows, MPEG/JPEG transport, encoding and decoding, Dolby-E, MATV/IPTV, multi-way processors, standards converters, frame syncs, matrix based communications systems, and plant routing systems
  • Ability to read and comprehend signal flow documents (CAD) as well as systems level troubleshooting and issue resolution.
  • Must be proficient with broadcast test and measurement equipment in addition to MS Office, Visio, and common project management tools (MS Project).


Desired Characteristics:

  • Excellent communicator and be able to manage highly technical operations teams while interfacing with Engineering, Operations, Production, and 3rd party vendors.
  • Must be able to multitask and manage in a high demand, ever changing, 24/7 environment.
  • Must have the ability to manage projects, oversee design, document and manage new system technical Systems as well as workflows.
  • Flexibility in working schedules including Nights, Weekends and off hours will be required along with planned and unplanned extended hours associated with major sporting events, outages, and technical issues.
  • Position may require occasional travel to remote sporting events, production locations and sites
  • Project management skills inclusive of management accountability of large capital projects ($5MM - $10MM+) and a proven track record of working within and meeting strict deadlines and schedules.
  • Experience and hands on knowledge of legacy and emerging teleproduction standards such as ST-2110, 1080i/1080P HDR, AES, Dante, Madi and media encoding/transport standards.
  • At least four to six year(s) of direct management experience with Golf Programming and Transmission needs.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Broadcast, Engineering or related field, and/or equivalent work experience.
  • Proficiency in AutoCad, and Wirelist creation
  • Cisco Certifications
  • FCC Technician Class or higher License
  • AWS Certifications
  • Television transmission technology experience including compressed transport of content using industry encoding schemes such as J2K, JPEGXS, MPEG4, along with knowledge and experience with multiple transport systems such as satellite, fiber, IP, and bonded cellular.
  • Proven track record of detailed project budgeting, design, build, and configuration/operation.
  • Experience with oversight of staff training, employee safety, and quality control for all linear and non-linear broadcast productions.
  • Required On-Site: This position is required to be performed full-time from an NBCUniversal-designated worksite.
