TITLE: Engineering Manager, Data Services
LOCATION: New York City (hybrid) or Fully Remote in the United States
SALARY: $160,000 - $180,000
The Role:
We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead our Data Services team, responsible for building the microservices that power Canoe's industry-leading Alts Data Platform. This team owns the core backend services that ingest, process, and serve data across Canoe products - including document ingestion, preprocessing, extraction, and fund-entity resolution - and will play a critical role in the platform's continued growth and evolution.
This is a leadership role with builder responsibilities. You'll manage and grow a team of six engineers while remaining a hands-on contributor: using agentic coding tools to prototype, build, and ship alongside your team. You'll shape how the team designs and operates distributed systems, drive cross-functional partnerships with Data Engineering, AI/ML, DevOps, and application teams, and take end-to-end ownership of the services your team delivers to production.

Who We Are:
Canoe is reimagining alternative investment data processes for hundreds of leading institutional investors, capital allocators, asset servicing firms and wealth managers. By combining industry expertise with the most sophisticated data capture technologies, Canoe's technology automates the highly-frustrating, time-consuming, and costly manual workflows related to alternative investment document and data management, extraction and delivery. With Canoe, clients can refocus capital and human resources on business performance and growth, increase efficiency, and gain deeper access to their data. Canoe's AI-driven platform was developed in 2013 for Portage Partners LLC, a private investment firm.

What You'll Do:
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of six backend engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
- Remain a technical contributor - using agentic coding tools to prototype, investigate, and ship code alongside your team, not just review it.
- Drive the design and evolution of Canoe's microservice architecture, including synchronous REST APIs and event-driven background processing systems.
- Own the full engineering lifecycle for your team's services: from technical design and implementation through production operations and ongoing improvements.
- Collaborate closely with Data Engineering, AI/ML, DevOps, and AppDev as the backend engineering representative in cross-functional initiatives.
- Lead hiring, drive the technical bar, and build the team over time.
- Manage project timelines, surface and remove blockers, and ensure a continuous flow of information within and across teams.
- Build observable, operationally excellent systems and raise the bar for how the broader engineering organization thinks about reliability and maintainability.
What We're Looking For:
- 7+ years of experience in software development, with a strong foundation in backend or microservices systems.
- 2+ years leading engineering teams or serving as a tech lead with meaningful people and delivery responsibility.
- Strong experience building web services in Python, including REST APIs.
- Experience with FastAPI (or equivalent Python web frameworks).
- Experience working with AWS services, including Lambda.
- Experience working with PostgreSQL and relational data modeling.
- Familiarity with background job processing and event-driven system patterns.
- High agency and a strong sense of ownership - you hold yourself and your team accountable for outcomes, not just outputs.
- A track record of working effectively across engineering, product, and other non-technical stakeholders.
- Genuine enthusiasm for AI-assisted development: you actively use coding agents such as Claude Code or equivalent tools, and advocate for their adoption within your team.
- Comfort with ambiguity and a startup-paced environment - you can make good decisions with incomplete information and adapt quickly.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
What You'll Get:
- Medical, dental, vision benefits
- Flexible PTO
- 401(k)
- Flexible work from home policy
- Home office stipend
- Employee Assistance Program
- Gym/Wifi reimbursement
- Education assistance
- Parental Leave
Our Values:
- Client First -> Listen, and deliver client-centric solutions
- Be An Owner -> Take initiative, improve situations, drive positive outcomes
- Excellence -> Always set the highest standard for yourself and others
- Win Together -> 1 + 1 = 3
