Lead and grow the mobile and AI platform engineering team to deliver reliable, real-time DNA-based health insights. Own roadmap, delivery predictability, React Native releases, performance, production reliability, AI model orchestration, multi-agent systems, incident response, API contracts, and cross-functional partnerships to ensure scalable, trustworthy AI experiences.
Sequencing is building the interface between humanity and its DNA.
Using clinical-grade whole genome sequencing, AI, and a rapidly expanding ecosystem of genomic applications, we help people better understand themselves, their health, and their future through their DNA.
The human genome is one of the most valuable and underutilized resources in the world. Our mission is to transform the human genome into a lifelong source of personalized guidance and build the trusted home for every genome on Earth.
As the world’s largest direct-to-consumer whole genome sequencing platform, Sequencing is helping define the future of AI-powered personalized health.
We’re a profitable, venture-backed, fully remote company building category-defining products that help people better understand themselves through their DNA.
We're hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the team that delivers Sequencing.com's AI health experience across every surface our customers touch: the React Native mobile app, the web app, and the backend AI platform that powers both. This is a holistic, cross-surface leadership role. The same team owns customer-facing frontends and the shared backend services behind them. You'll lead engineers working across mobile and backend/AI - so we're looking for someone comfortable operating across the full stack, not a single-surface specialist.
You'll partner closely with the AI Technical Lead, who owns architecture and technical direction, while you own day-to-day execution: delivery discipline, roadmap sequencing, production reliability, and team health. You don't need to be the deepest engineer in the room but you do need to hold your own in technical conversations, understand the trade-offs, and translate them into credible estimates, release plans, and business outcomes.
- Cross-surface delivery. Own roadmap sequencing, delivery predictability, and capacity planning across the native app, web app, and AI platform.
- Multi-surface releases. Drive predictable releases across React Native (iOS/Android), web, and backend, with strong focus on quality, product execution, and customer experience.
- Shared backend integrity. Keep backend contracts and APIs clean and stable so mobile, web, and platform teams move quickly without friction or rework - the backend serves multiple frontends, and boundary discipline is non-negotiable.
- People leadership. Lead and develop a distributed team through coaching, regular 1:1s, hiring, and performance management, with clear day-to-day accountability.
- Complex content, clear UX. Partner with Product and Bioinformatics to turn genomic complexity into experiences customers can actually understand and act on - with accuracy guardrails and measurable AI performance.
- AI platform execution. Drive production-grade implementation of the multi-agent architecture - planner agents, retrieval systems, model orchestration, and latency optimization.
- Reliability and trust. Improve performance, stability, and deployment reliability across surfaces so customers can trust their health insights any time they open the app.
- Quality gates. Build evaluation and regression checks into release workflows so health insights stay stable as the system evolves; set and enforce clear targets for performance, reliability, and latency.
- Architectural boundaries. Maintain clean separation between the AI platform and core systems so the platform stays understandable and maintainable.
- Team resilience. Reduce key-person dependencies so the platform scales sustainably.
- Incident leadership. Lead AI-related incident response, postmortems, and long-term fixes so sensitive health data and insights stay dependable.
- Leadership communication. Translate deep technical detail into simple operational plans, and communicate clearly with leadership on quality, reliability, and trade-offs.
Who you are
- 5+ years of engineering management, working with high-complexity, high-visibility systems.
- Full-stack leadership range. You've led teams spanning frontend and backend and are comfortable owning multiple customer-facing surfaces (mobile and web) built on shared backend services. This is the core of the role; single-surface specialists won't be a fit.
- Native mobile experience, ideally React Native across iOS and Android, as one of several surfaces you lead, not your only one.
- Consumer product instincts in a complex domain. You've led customer-facing products that turn complex, information-dense content into clear, usable experiences. This does not have to be health tech or genomics but you should understand the challenge of making complicated content legible to real users.
- Technical judgment over hands-on depth. You can hold your own in architecture and trade-off discussions, understand the implications, and tie them to estimates, release schedules, and business needs. You don't need to be the most technical person on the team, you need to make the team's technical decisions land on time and on target.
- Strong people management, coaching, 1:1s, hiring, and performance management.
- AI/ML production familiarity. Comfortable leading teams working with multi-agent systems, planner agents, retrieval architecture, model orchestration, and ML-backed production systems even if you're not the one designing them.
- Backend foundation in TypeScript or a similar production environment.
- Proven execution discipline. A track record of improving predictability and delivery discipline, and enforcing clean architectural boundaries between systems and teams.
- Power user of AI and LLM tools for planning, communication, and process design. Not optional.
- Strong command of Jira, Confluence, and similar project management and documentation tooling.
- Distributed/remote team leadership experience.
- Clear communicator who turns deep technical detail into simple operational plans for non-technical partners.
- East Coast-based, working hours aligned to U.S. Eastern Time (ET).
