We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to own an area of our product, help grow our engineering teams and culture, bring forward innovation to our technology organization and be an advocate to best engineering practices. You will be working with teams across the company to turn business, strategic objectives, and product requirements into implementable work. In the longer term, success in this role looks like a cohesive, high-functioning, and diverse group of software engineers who help each other deliver high-quality software on predictable timelines.

What you'll do:

Team Leadership & People Development

  • Recruit, onboard, mentor, and grow a diverse team of engineers and contractors.
  • Foster a culture of trust, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous learning.
  • Promote career development via regular coaching, mentoring, and support.

Engineering Excellence & Process Optimization

  • Ensure high-quality software development practices across the entire lifecycle.
  • Enhance team productivity and efficiency by continuously improving engineering processes.
  • Drive application performance, scalability, and sustainability by owning technical initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work with product managers, designers, and stakeholders to prioritize roadmap items, identify risks, negotiate trade-offs, and align on outcomes.
  • Collaborate with UX to build intuitive, modern web applications.
  • Support software releases through coordination with DevOps, QA, and support teams.

Project & Technical Leadership

  • Solve complex technical challenges through architecture, design, and process discussions.
  • Establish clarity and alignment by participating in sprint review, planning, grooming, and retrospectives.
  • Break down complex problems into manageable tasks and advocate for data-informed decision-making.

Strategic Impact

  • Actively contribute to long-term technical and organizational planning.
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional strategy conversations with clarity and influence.

About you:

  • BS in Computer Science or a related field.
  • 5+ years designing, building, deploying, and debugging scalable, cloud-based web applications.
  • Proficient in frontend technologies, API development, and SQL-based databases such as PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture, including SOLID principles, design patterns, and scalable system design.
  • 2-3 years of experience leading engineering teams, with strong mentoring, coaching, and people management skills.
  • Proven ability to recruit, retain, and develop diverse, inclusive, and high-performing teams
  • Skilled in resolving conflicts, fostering trust, and promoting a culture of collaboration and psychological safety
  • Experienced with Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and LEAN product development.
  • Strong strategic planning, prioritization, and stakeholder collaboration abilities.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and documentation skills.

Additional Information
The annual salary range for this position is $160,000 to $190,000. The salary range for performing this role outside of the US / Austin / California may differ.  8am is committed to offering competitive, fair and commensurate compensation and has provided an estimated pay range for this role. Actual compensation may vary based on job-related knowledge, skills, experience and education.
