The Engineering Manager will lead the engineering team, drive execution, mentor engineers, improve team performance, and collaborate with other departments to enhance product deliveries.
Location: NYC Metro Area (Williamsburg Office, 3+ days/week)
Reports to: CTO
Photon gives patients ownership of prescriptions. Our platform enables clinicians to send prescriptions to patients via text, which saves them time by allowing their patients to shop between pharmacies. The vision is to help consumers save money by increasing transparency.
We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and scale our engineering team across Photon.
This is a high-impact, cross-cutting role responsible for people management, execution, and team effectiveness across engineering—from patient experience to customer integrations and internal systems. You’ll work closely with the CTO to ensure we’re building the right things, while also improving how teams operate: increasing clarity, alignment, and consistency as we scale.
You’ll play a key role in developing engineers, strengthening team performance, and identifying where structure, ownership, or processes need to evolve. This includes addressing challenges directly, improving how teams work together, and ensuring the organization is set up to operate effectively.
If you’re excited about building strong teams, improving how work gets done, and shipping meaningful products in a complex space like healthcare, this role is for you.
- Manage and mentor engineers across multiple pods, supporting their growth, performance, and career development
- Drive hiring and team building—attracting and retaining strong engineering talent
- Drive execution across teams, ensuring clear priorities, strong alignment, and consistent delivery
- Partner closely with Product, Ops, and Commercial teams to plan roadmaps, scope projects, and make tradeoffs
- Identify and address performance issues, team misalignment, and execution risks
- Contribute to technical direction as needed, while ensuring teams can execute effectively day-to-day
- Build a strong engineering culture rooted in ownership, accountability, and high standards
- 5+ years of software engineering experience, with 2+ years in an engineering management role
- Experience managing engineers across multiple teams or a full product surface area
- Strong track record of improving team execution, delivery, and overall effectiveness
- Experience identifying and resolving team, organizational, or process issues
- Ability to create clarity in ambiguous environments—across priorities, ownership, and decision-making
- Experience working closely with Product, Ops, and Commercial in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to address difficult or complex situations directly
- Background in scaling early or growth-stage engineering teams
- Experience improving developer productivity and internal workflows
- Familiarity with APIs, integrations, or distributed systems
- Experience in healthcare, fintech, or other complex/regulatory environments
- Experience leveraging AI in workflows
Photon is reimagining how prescriptions move through the healthcare system—making it simpler, faster, and more transparent for patients, providers, and pharmacies alike. You’ll:
- Work closely with a small, high-performing team across engineering, product, and design
- Work on a problem almost everyone you know has experienced, and help fix a system that’s broken in ways most people just accept
- Be pushed—these are hard problems, and we expect a lot—but the growth and impact that come with it are real
- Manage a team of truly exceptional software engineers
- Join a team that gives a shit—about the work, about each other, and about doing things the right way. High trust, high standards, and we actually like spending time together
