Job Summary

The power of AEP comes from our valued team of unique employees—the best in the business. We’re proud to be one of the largest electric energy companies in the U.S., powering over 5 million homes and businesses across 11 states. Guided by our mission to put the customer first, we’re passionate about making an innovative difference in the communities we serve—listening, responding, and continuously improving the way we deliver safe, reliable, and forward-thinking energy solutions. We’re powering the future—today.
The Enterprise Architect designs, governs, and evolves the organization's technology landscape, ensuring enterprise platforms and applications align with business strategy, scalability needs, and long-term technology direction. This role sets and maintains software technology standards, guides platform and application architecture decisions, and partners across engineering, security, and business teams to ensure solutions are consistent, interoperable, and future-ready.

Job Description

What you’ll do:

Essential Job Functions & Tasks

Enterprise Architecture Strategy & Standards

  • Define and maintain the enterprise architecture strategy and standards across back office, front office, and the IT and application landscape, ensuring alignment across business units and engineering teams.

  • Evaluate and select technologies, frameworks and tools.

  • Establish and continuously evolve enterprise technology standards — reference architectures, design patterns, API standards, and technology-selection guidelines.

  • Own the enterprise application portfolio map and architecture repository: system relationships, integration dependencies, and lifecycle status across all major platforms.

Application & IT Architecture

  • Govern application architecture standards — microservices, event-driven architecture, domain-driven design, API-first development, service decomposition, and monolith modernization.

  • Provide architectural oversight and guidance for major platform and application initiatives, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards, security requirements and scalability goals.

  • Define IT architecture standards for identity and access management, endpoint management, network segmentation, and enterprise tooling governance.

Governance & Risk

  • Identify and mitigate architectural risk, technical debt, and integration gaps.

  • Ensure designs meet security, compliance, and regulatory requirements.

  • Drive adoption of standards through audits and technical reviews.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with engineering, product, security, and infrastructure teams on design reviews.

  • Collaborate with domain architects and solution teams to ensure consistent application of architectural standards.

  • Resolve technical trade-offs between competing priorities and teams.

  • Mentor engineers and architects on standards and best practices.

Strategy Alignment & Thought Leadership

  • Document and socialize architectural roadmaps, target states, and transition strategies.

  • Stay current on emerging technology trends and share insights to continuously evolve AEP’s technology capabilities.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field

  • 10+ years in software engineering or architecture, including enterprise-scale system design

  • Deep knowledge of microservices, APIs, cloud-native, and event-driven architecture patterns

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and modern DevOps practices

  • Demonstrated experience building and governing an enterprise portfolio across SaaS, custom, and legacy systems, and driving rationalization at scale.

  • Track record of introducing new or emerging technology into an enterprise — not only rationalizing what exists — including exposure to AI/GenAI architecture.

  • Vendor technical leadership: review delivered work, spot risks early, and drive quality outcomes.

  • Proven ability to influence and drive alignment without direct authority, balancing standards with delivery realities.

  • Proven ability to communicate architectural vision and recommendations to senior leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a technical or analytical discipline.

  • Familiarity with regulated or mission-critical environments such as utilities, energy, finance, or infrastructure

What We're Looking For:

Education requirements are listed below:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related technical field is required.

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • 8 years of relevant work experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and related experience may be considered.

At AEP, we’re more than just an energy company — we’re a team of dedicated professionals committed to delivering safe, reliable, and innovative energy solutions. Guided by our mission to put the customer first, we strive to exceed expectations by listening, responding, and continuously improving the way we serve our communities.
