JOB OPENING: ESG & Impact Manager

Hybrid/Remote

Big change is underway at Clean Energy Ventures. We’re growing into an international, multi-fund, diverse venture capital team.  And, now more than ever, we are focused on beating back climate change through innovation.

We’re a different kind of climate tech VC firm: we lean into complex technologies, we transform strong technical teams into strong commercial teams, and we have a 20-year track record of investments. We invest in multifaceted — often hardtech — solutions that will enable decarbonization at massive scale, then provide hands-on guidance to guide our startups’ successes.

Our team is transparent, growth-oriented, and inclusive. We believe in the work we’re doing to help save the planet and the power of the technologies and people we invest in.

Position Description

This position will lead our firm’s ESG practice. As a sustainable investor and leader in our ecosystem, we believe it’s important to continue to lead on the monitoring, evaluation, and improvement of ESG and impact within our firm and our portfolio companies. You will be responsible for improving our current ESG tracking and reporting systems and designing content and programming directly with our portfolio companies to help them improve their environmental, social and governance position.

If you wake up thinking about sustainability, love building systems, and want to engage with startups every week, then this role might be great for you. It’s even better for you if you know what all these acronyms mean: VCA, NZAM, SFDR, TCFD, OECD, and DEI.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Work with our investment team to perform ESG and impact assessments during screening and due diligence, and report to the Investment Committee to ensure ESG alignment.
  • Develop programming to help our early-stage startup investments advance ESG issues within their organizations, and undertake regular hands-on engagements with them to drive results.
  • Own ESG reporting to our investors, including managing the collecting of data from our portfolio companies, ensuring our ESG regulatory compliance (including SFDR Article 9), and developing our annual Impact Report.
  • Manage and track our firm’s ESG practices, including our own path to net zero, and work with our Community Manager to improve our DEI practices internally.
  • Own the development and expansion of our Simple Emissions Reduction Calculator tool as an industry-leading ERP assessment for early-stage startups.
  • Act as an industry leader for impact capital, speaking at and attending industry events on our behalf and engaging with relevant trade organizations and working groups.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • You have 5+ years of experience in sustainability, finance, or investing.
  • You have deep working knowledge of ESG best practices and relevant regulations in the United States and the European Union.
  • You have experience setting performance, compliance or regulatory goals for an organization and helping the organization meet those goals.
  • You are a data wiz and can back it up with strong examples of quantitative data analysis.
  • You have strong project management skills.
  • You have great communications skills and can boil down complex topics into approachable stories and frameworks.

Compensation & Benefits

We provide competitive and holistic compensation to all our team members, including:

  • Competitive salary
  • Carried interest (i.e., a share in the profits from fund performance)
  • 401(k) and additional retirement plan benefits
  • Healthcare coverage or healthcare coverage subsidy
  • Unlimited vacation policy, mental health personal days, generous sick leave, plus a week-long winter break at the end of December
  • Paid parental leave and medical leave of up to 20 weeks; short and long term disability
  • Work from home office stipend and cell phone stipend

Clean Energy Ventures operates in a hybrid work environment when health and safety regulations permit. This role can be fulfilled remotely, with the expectation of semi-monthly travel.

Closing Statement

At Clean Energy Ventures we aim to improve the diversity of our team. We also aim to enhance our team’s understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to identify and manage our own unconscious biases in the hiring process and otherwise. We encourage all qualified applicants from any background to apply for this role.

Above and beyond discrimination/harassment based on “protected categories,” Clean Energy Ventures also strives to prevent other, subtler forms of inappropriate behavior (e.g., stereotyping) from ever gaining a foothold in our team. Whether blatant or hidden, barriers to success have no place at Clean Energy Ventures.

Clean Energy Ventures is an equal opportunity employer, and will not discriminate in terms of recruitment, progression and terms and conditions of work on the basis of personal characteristics unrelated to inherent job requirements including gender, race, color, disability, political opinion, sexual orientation, age, religion, origin, and marital status.
