ROLE: Executive Editor, GQ

GQ is a global authority on style, culture, and modern masculinity, reaching an audience of millions across print, digital, video, and social platforms.
The US Executive Editor will oversee editorial execution across print, digital, and video, ensuring the brand’s voice and ambitions are realized in everything GQ creates. This role reports to, and works closely with, the Global Editorial Director of GQ to orchestrate a cohesive editorial vision while maintaining operational excellence.

The Executive Editor will manage both big-picture priorities and day-to-day needs across platforms, giving clear direction and feedback so that senior staff can work as effectively and as independently as possible. The role demands long-term planning skills and the ability to anticipate when GQ’s editorial strategy needs to adapt.

The Executive Editor will also factor heavily into the many ways GQ exists beyond print, site, and video. This includes being a key voice within GQ’s global editorial network, particularly in fostering, shaping, and directing global projects—as well as helping to develop and shape tentpole events, including GQ’s annual Men of the Year, and any potential additions to the GQ events calendar.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Shape GQ’s voice, ambitions, and editorial direction in line with the vision of the Global Editorial Director, applying and adapting them across all of US GQ’s platforms and content to drive a cohesive presence across print, site, and video

  • Work in partnership with the Global Director of Content Strategy to ensure that programming across site and video delivers on goals and audience growth

  • Ensure a consistent, high-quality editorial point of view

  • Lead and manage the end-to-end editorial process across all US platforms

  • Oversee commissioning, editing, production workflows, and publishing cadence for print

  • Partner with editorial operations to optimize processes, staffing, and resource allocation, including planning and managing content budgets

  • Manage and mentor a senior editorial team, including holding performance reviews, providing regular feedback, and overseeing hiring and talent development

  • Foster a dynamic, collaborative, and engaged environment, acting as a coach and mentor for junior staff members

  • Translate editorial priorities into scalable franchises, packages, and tentpole moments, including events and off-platform opportunities

  • Contribute to audience growth strategies, including subscriptions, social expansion, and video programming

  • Protect editorial integrity while supporting business objectives

  • Work closely with global GQ leadership to align US content with international priorities and opportunities

  • Contribute ideas, talent, and editorial packages to global initiatives

  • Share best practices and content across markets, taking a lead role in working collaboratively with Heads of Editorial Content around the world

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of senior editorial experience, preferably within a multi-platform media organization

  • Proven leadership overseeing print, digital, and video editorial operations

  • Strong editorial judgment and a clear, differentiated point of view

  • Experience managing large teams and complex workflows

  • Deep understanding of audience development, digital publishing, and video strategy

  • Track record of delivering audience growth and impactful editorial franchises

  • Strong collaboration skills across editorial, business, and product teams

  • A sharp editorial sensibility rooted in culture, style, and storytelling

  • Operational rigor paired with creative ambition

  • Ability to balance long-term vision with day-to-day execution

  • High emotional intelligence and the ability to lead through influence, build trust across a team, and bring out the best in people at every level

The expected base salary range for this position is from $205,000 - $271,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.

In addition to salary and a generous employee benefits package, successful candidates may also be eligible to receive discretionary bonus compensation.
