We are seeking a Freelance Social & Digital Art Director with pharmaceutical promotional agency experience and a portfolio that demonstrates strong social-first and digital-first design. This is a hands-on creative role for an art director who understands how content is experienced across feeds, paid placements, stories, carousels, short-form video, and broader digital environments.

This is not a traditional, print-first Art Director position. The right candidate is a strong conceptual partner and highly skilled designer who can create work that is visually immediate, platform-appropriate, flexible across formats, and built for the realities of regulated pharmaceutical communications.

Job Summary

The Social & Digital Art Director will concept, design, and direct visual content for pharmaceutical brands across social and digital channels. You will partner closely with copywriters, strategists, account teams, and production specialists to create visually compelling, strategically grounded, and medically compliant work from initial concept through final delivery.

You should be comfortable developing both individual social assets and scalable content systems that can support multiple platforms, placements, audience needs, and campaign phases. This role requires strong design craft, a current understanding of social behavior and digital formats, and the ability to translate complex brand and clinical information into clear, engaging visual storytelling.

Job Responsibilities and Skills

  • Concept and design social-first and digital-first creative for pharmaceutical brands.
  • Develop visual systems and polished assets for organic social, paid social, carousels, stories, reels, short-form video, motion content, display, web, and other digital formats.
  • Partner with copywriters to develop integrated ideas in which visual storytelling and messaging work together across platforms.
  • Translate brand strategy, campaign objectives, and complex clinical information into clear, engaging, consumer-appropriate visual communications.
  • Create visual territories, mood boards, storyboards, social-content frameworks, design explorations, and presentation materials.
  • Adapt creative work across platform specifications, placements, audience segments, and campaign phases while maintaining creative quality and brand consistency.
  • Design with pharmaceutical promotional requirements in mind, including fair balance, required safety information, claims support, reference considerations, and annotation needs.
  • Collaborate with motion designers, editors, illustrators, photographers, retouchers, and other production partners to ensure quality from concept through final delivery.
  • Maintain a high standard of typography, layout, composition, color, imagery, accessibility, and brand consistency.
  • Participate in creative reviews and present work clearly and persuasively to internal teams and clients.
  • Stay current on social and digital design behaviors, emerging content formats, platform conventions, and visual trends.
  • Manage multiple projects, revisions, and deadlines in a fast-paced agency environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual communications, fine arts, or a related discipline—or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of art direction and design experience, including experience at a pharmaceutical promotional or healthcare advertising agency.
  • Pharmaceutical promotional agency experience is required.
  • Demonstrated experience designing social content and digital creative for pharmaceutical brands is required.
  • A portfolio featuring strong examples of social-first and digital-first work, including paid social, organic social, short-form video or motion, responsive design systems, and platform-specific creative executions.
  • Strong conceptual thinking combined with excellent hands-on design and execution skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; Figma proficiency is strongly preferred.
  • Experience collaborating with or directing motion designers, editors, illustrators, photographers, retouchers, and other production partners.
  • Experience working within pharmaceutical medical, legal, and regulatory review processes; annotation and Veeva-submission experience is a plus.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, presentation, organization, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, respond constructively to feedback, and balance creative ambition with accuracy, compliance, and production realities.

Portfolio requirement: Applicants must submit a portfolio with clear examples of pharmaceutical social and digital design. Traditional print, detail aid, or general brand work alone is not sufficient.
