About the Role

Apkudo's Device OS team is the engineering backbone that makes our custom hardware appliances and software platforms work reliably at scale — from Outpost integrations at partner sites to storage cell orchestration and SLA reporting for field-deployed units. We are looking for an experienced Front End Engineer who cares deeply about how websites and applications perform and who can turn complex device workflows, telemetry, and operational data into interfaces that field operators, partners, and internal teams actually trust. Device OS is where our customers see how their appliances are performing and configure them, so the interfaces you build are how the platform is experienced day to day. You will own the front-end architecture for the applications that surface Apkudo's Device Passport platform, partner closely with backend engineers to make sure the right data flows through so everything loads fast, work hand-in-hand with design to craft the best possible customer experience, mentor engineers on your team, and help set the direction for how our products look, feel, and perform.

What You Own

We are agile, and so our days and duties can vary. In this role you own and are responsible for delivering to your colleagues:

  • Design, build, and maintain React and TypeScript applications where customers see how their appliances are performing and configure them, and that expose device workflows, telemetry, and control surfaces to field operators, partners, and internal teams.

  • Care deeply about performance — partner with backend engineers to shape the data that flows to the front end so pages and apps load fast and stay responsive under real operational load.

  • Work hand-in-hand with design to craft the best possible customer experience, contributing to UX decisions rather than just implementing them.

  • Own the front-end architecture — component structure, state management, and data-fetching patterns — keeping the codebase maintainable, testable, and scalable as the platform grows.

  • Build responsive, accessible interfaces that hold up under real operational conditions: large data sets, real-time updates, and intermittent connectivity at partner sites.

  • Integrate deeply with RESTful APIs and real-time data streams, handling asynchronous state, loading and error conditions, and graceful failure with care.

  • Translate complex device states and workflows into clear, intuitive UI that makes correctness, status, and next actions obvious to the operator.

  • Build and extend shared component libraries and design systems so the team ships consistent, high-quality UI quickly.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with backend, hardware, and field operations teams to deliver complete, field-ready features.

  • Conduct thorough code reviews, write technical design documents, and raise the engineering bar across the team.

  • Build and extend our Tailwind CSS–based design system and shared component packages so multiple apps across the platform ship consistent UI.

What You Bring

We know there are many paths to performing well. We think it would be hard to do this job well without the following specialized education or proven experience:

  • Fluency in software engineering fundamentals — clean code, testability, version control, and code review — shown through a track record of shipping production systems.

  • Strong, hands-on experience building production front-end applications with React (5+ years) as a primary focus.

  • Deep, production-grade TypeScript experience — you use the type system to make interfaces safer and code more maintainable.

  • A genuine care for performance and customer experience — you sweat load times, responsiveness, and the details that make an interface feel fast and effortless.

  • Proven ability to architect front-end applications: thoughtful component design, state management, and sensible data-fetching patterns.

  • Strong command of modern web fundamentals — semantic HTML, CSS/styling systems, browser rendering, and performance optimization.

  • Experience integrating with RESTful APIs and handling asynchronous state, real-time updates, and error conditions robustly.

  • Hands-on experience building with and maintaining design systems or shared component libraries.

  • Fluency with AI-assisted development tools — e.g. Codex, Claude Code, Copilot, or Cursor — and good judgment about where they speed you up and where they need review.

  • Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG) and a habit of building inclusive interfaces by default.

  • Experience with front-end testing (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, Cypress, or similar) and keeping applications reliable as they scale.

  • BS in Computer Science or a related field — relevant experience may substitute for or augment formal education.

  • Strong technical communication skills and the ability to collaborate closely with backend, hardware, design, and product partners.

  • Production experience with Next.js, Tailwind CSS, and lightweight state management libraries (e.g. Zustand).

  • Familiarity with Next.js rendering models — Server-Side Rendering, React Server Components, and Server Actions — and judgment about when each fits.

  • Experience with CI/CD for front-end deployments (GitHub Actions, S3/CloudFront static hosting).

Nice to Have

  • Experience in hardware, operations, or supply-chain-heavy environments where data is real-time and stakes are high.

  • Experience building hardware interfaces — UIs for configuring, monitoring, or controlling physical devices or appliances.

  • Familiarity with data visualization libraries (D3, Recharts, visx) for surfacing telemetry and operational metrics.

  • Exposure to build tooling and front-end infrastructure (Vite, Webpack, CI/CD for front-end deployments).

  • Prior experience contributing to a platform product serving multiple enterprise customers.

  • Experience working in monorepos (Turborepo, Nx) with shared packages and multiple deployable apps.

  • Experience shipping a multi-tenant platform, per-customer configuration, theming, and localization from a single codebase.
