General Counsel (NYC)

The Role

We’re looking for a sharp, deeply experienced General Counsel to join our lean and mission-driven team. This person will lead all legal, regulatory, compliance, and policy functions — with a mandate to be both highly strategic and highly hands-on.

You’ll help us secure licenses, build a capital-light compliance program, manage contracts and legal risk, and shape the rules that define our industry. The ideal candidate is efficient, thoughtful, and proactive — someone who protects the company while pushing us forward.

Responsibilities
  • Regulatory & Licensing

    • Lead and execute all efforts to secure relevant licenses (OCC, payments, custody, etc.)

    • Engage directly with federal and state regulators (SEC, CFTC, OCC, FinCEN, NYDFS)

    • Help define and advocate for policy frameworks that position us competitively

  • Compliance as a Competitive Advantage

    • Build and operate a compliance program that is lighter, faster, and more scalable than incumbents — using AI and automation wherever possible

    • Oversee AML, KYC, transaction monitoring, and law enforcement engagement

    • Set internal standards, policies, and controls with an emphasis on automation and efficiency

  • Corporate, Product & Commercial Legal

    • Serve as in-house counsel across product, corporate, and commercial matters

    • Draft and negotiate contracts with vendors, partners, and institutions

    • Advise internal teams on legal implications of new products and markets

  • Team & External Counsel Management

    • Build and lead a compact, talent-dense internal legal/compliance team

    • Manage outside counsel judiciously — minimal overhead, high signal, low cost

  • Act as a trusted advisor to founders and executive leadership on all legal risk

Requirements
  • JD from a top-tier law school and active bar membership

  • 10+ years in legal roles (preferably including experience in fintech, crypto, or financial regulation)

  • Demonstrated success securing licenses or building legal infrastructure in a regulated environment

  • Hands-on experience with compliance program design, regulatory engagement, and contract negotiation

  • Comfort working in lean, fast-moving, high-context environments

  • Excellent judgment and a proactive, solutions-oriented mindset

  • Based in (or willing to relocate to) NYC, with regular travel to DC
