Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

At Waymo Insurance, you will work on the cutting edge of emerging risk and related issues surrounding our transformational autonomous driving technology and help drive our business lines forward from technology ideation through scaled commercial deployment. We partner with our legal, public policy, safety, security and privacy experts to evaluate and manage risks for the autonomous driving world to come, advising on insurance trends, evaluating and quantifying product liability, auto, cyber and related risks to ensure we build the appropriate risk and insurance frameworks to support and protect our users around the world. We collaborate with our business development, product partnership, strategy and operations teams in the execution of our business plans to ensure the company's interests are well protected from existing, new and emerging risks. We support the legal, policy and regulatory teams as they optimize our exposure in line with our risk appetite through the review of contracts, evaluation and shaping of emerging law and regulation at both the state and federal level. And we anticipate, quantify and mitigate emerging risk by maintaining active relationships and frequent contact with insurance and AV industry partners.

In this hybrid role, you will report into our Head of Risk & Insurance.

You will:

  • Develop Actuarial Infrastructure: Build and scale the foundational actuarial infrastructure and data systems required to support the full portfolio of Waymo's risk exposures.
  • Drive Management Reporting: Establish robust management reporting frameworks to communicate risk insights, portfolio performance, and actuarial findings to senior leadership.
  • Lead Strategic Risk Advisory Efforts: Serve as a trusted advisor to senior business functions, providing guidance on risk tolerance and balance sheet protection strategies.
  • Innovate Safety Methodologies: Collaborate with internal teams to drive the development of groundbreaking actuarial methodologies to identify outsized risks and quantify the safety performance of the Waymo Driver compared to human benchmarks.
  • Oversee Advanced Modeling: Own the outcomes for complex pricing and reserving models that quantify Waymo's expected losses and support insurance program negotiations.
  • Establish Enterprise Risk Modeling Capabilities: Lead initiatives to quantify enterprise-level risks, providing senior management with a strategic framework for risk prioritization.
  • Influence Industry & Regulatory Standards: Represent Waymo in engagements, if needed, regarding regulatory outcomes for autonomous vehicle (AV) insurance requirements.

You have:

  • Technical Mastery: High technical acumen and a strong mastery of statistics and actuarial science.
  • Advanced Quantitative Background: An advanced degree in statistics, math, engineering or actuarial science with a mastery of both technical and business contexts.
  • Professional Credentials: FCAS (Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society) or a PhD in a quantitative field is required.
  • Proven Leadership in Ambiguity: A track record of solving large, open-ended problems and driving outcomes for projects where the high-level nature of the solution was previously unclear.
  • Executive Communication Skills: Excellent collaboration and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to present complex actuarial findings and strategic insights to very senior audiences.
  • Strategic Influence: Ability to lead persuasively across senior stakeholders while reflecting diverse needs, concerns, and business interests into project deliverables.
  • Deep Casualty Expertise: Extensive experience in pricing and reserving for commercial auto lines and novel risk exposures.

We prefer:

  • PhD: A PhD in Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or a related highly quantitative field.
  • ERM/CERA Designation: Specialized background in Enterprise Risk Management or a CERA (Chartered Enterprise Risk Analyst) designation.
  • Innovative Problem Solving: A demonstrated ability to develop creative solutions for vague problems in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
