Cityblock Health is a new type of healthcare company, operating out of Brooklyn and backed by Alphabet’s Sidewalk Labs, along with some of the top healthcare and tech investors in the country.

Our mission is to radically improve the health of urban communities, one block at a time. Importantly, our solutions are designed specifically for Medicaid and lower-income Medicare beneficiaries, and we bring the capability to deliver care in the home and neighborhood with our field-based teams.

In close collaboration with community-based organizations and leading commercial partners, we are reorganizing the health system to focus on what matters to our members. We deliver personalized primary care, behavioral health, and social services through a network of neighborhood hubs with deep community-based partnerships and world-class technology. 

We partner with payers and at-risk providers, accepting capitated financial risk to care for their most vulnerable, high and rising risk members. Additionally, we invest in strategic partnerships with community-based and social services organizations, in some instances bringing them into the value equation through sub-capitation and performance-based compensation. 

Over the next year we’ll grow quickly, including entering new markets, each with their own commercial relationships and field-based teams. This role will be a key contributor to the success of our business.

About the role:

As a Summer Fellow on our Actuary team, you’ll spearhead several key projects and initiatives over the 10-12 week engagement. Support our Chief Actuary and Actuarial Manager, you’ll utilize your data & analytics skills to enhance the team’s reporting and analysis capabilities. This is a great opportunity for a graduate student to make a tangible impact on a lean team in a rapidly scaling, mission-oriented healthcare startup.

You will: 

  • Productionize and enhance standard analysis of drivers for financial reporting
  • Organize internal IC and data and project folders, and refine and implement the plan for maintenance
  • Pilot specific medical trend and utilization-type analyses, including incorporating benchmark and Cityblock proprietary service-generated data 

Requirements for the role: 

  • You’re currently enrolled or are completing an Actuarial or Data Science graduate degree 
  • You have experience in the healthcare industry 
  • You’re proficient in SQL, Python, R, and/or SAS
  • You are analytically inclined and able to use data to answer complex business questions
  • You’re flexible and scrappy, with the ability to multitask and manage your time effectively 
  • You’re passionate about Cityblock’s mission
  • You’re a problem solver with an eye for process-improvement 
  • You care about adding value to a rapidly scaling organization 

How We Define Success:

  • Create an implementation of Standard Reporting to reduce the time to produce these on a monthly basis to
  • Positive feedback from Corporate & Market Leadership on quality of actuarial materials
  • Demonstrated improvement of Knowledge Management processes on the Actuarial team
  • Completed pilot analyses including process for better incorporating select Cityblock internal data elements to actuarial analytical environment
