Job Description

Random House Children's Books, a division of Penguin Random House, seeks a Junior Designer to join the Marketing Design Team. As a Junior Designer, you will help build on our current successes in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Together with your colleagues in the marketing, publicity, cover art, and editorial departments, you will bring to life standout campaigns for our best-selling books, series, and brands like Hilo, Grumpy Monkey, Wonder, and more!  

Random House Children’s Books is the world’s largest English-language children’s trade book publisher. We create books for toddlers through young adult readers, in all formats from board books to activity books to picture books, novels, graphic novels, and nonfiction. The imprints of Random House Children’s Books bring together award-winning authors and illustrators, world-famous franchise characters, and multimillion-copy series. 

Reporting to the Art Director, the ideal candidate will be a creative, collaborative, and enthusiastic designer with strong organizational and time management skills. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of projects and genres in the children’s book industry. 

Specific responsibilities include: 

  • Design high-visibility campaigns focusing on Middle Grade, Picture, and Board books. This includes both printed and digital marketing materials supporting advertising and marketing campaigns across web, social, and email platforms, as well as printed promotional collateral, point-of-purchase (POP) displays and signage. 
  • Develop fresh concepts in collaboration with campaign teams while ensuring visual consistency across various campaign touchpoints 
  • Assist design team members in managing and delegating campaign design work to out-of-house freelance talent as needed 
  • Effectively communicate with colleagues, artists, and agents. 
  • Prep files for final printed or digital release and manage the project tracking and file archiving daily 
  • Work closely with Book Design staff to acquire most up-to-date assets and with Production staff to ensure all projects are on spec 
  • Remain current on illustration, design, technology, and publishing trends 

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of design experience with a keen interest in design for highly illustrated properties and products 
  • A portfolio that highlights strong understanding of typography and creation of effective layouts—illustration skills a plus. 
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) with emphasis on InDesign. Familiarity with Adobe After Effects a plus.  
  • Knowledge of color correction, retouching, and file preparation for output, both digital and print 
  • Ability to work conceptually and to work well under pressure with internal and external stakeholders to meet deadlines  
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with attention to detail 
  • Self-motivated, able to prioritize in a fast-paced environment and can work as well independently as on a team 
  • Understanding of basic UI and UX principles a plus but not required 

Additional Information

The Penguin Random House national headquarters is located in New York City. This position is open to remote candidates who are based in the United States and can work on Eastern Time.

The salary for this position is $60,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
