Berry Street’s providers conduct thousands of one-on-one sessions every month — conversations that capture a wealth of insight about what great care looks like, how patients progress, and how providers evolve. With hundreds of thousands of session transcripts, we’re now unlocking that information to better understand outcomes and personalize care at scale.

We’re hiring a Lead AI Engineer to design and own the systems that make this possible. You’ll combine data science, machine learning, and data engineering to turn unstructured text into meaningful, measurable insights. You’ll define the roadmap for how Berry Street builds scoring, predictive, and recommendation systems that help providers deliver more personalized and effective care.

This is a high-impact, hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of AI innovation and production engineering, bringing advanced models — from fine-tuned LLMs to recommendation systems — into real-world use.

• Design and build end-to-end AI systems — from data ingestion and preprocessing to model training, deployment, and monitoring.
• Develop and refine predictive, scoring, and recommendation models that quantify session quality, track patient progress, and personalize care plans.
• Fine-tune and evaluate large language models (LLMs) to enhance provider and patient experiences through reliable, clinically safe interactions.
• Prototype and iterate rapidly on AI-powered product features, integrating stakeholder feedback to ensure measurable impact.
• Collaborate with engineering and product teams to scale ML infrastructure and ensure reliability, transparency, and observability.

We’d love to hear from you if you…

• Have 7+ years of experience in data science, ML engineering, or applied AI, with proven success taking models from prototype to production.
• Have strong grounding in machine learning fundamentals — feature design, validation, bias mitigation, and evaluation.
• Are fluent in Python and familiar with modern AI tooling (OpenAI, Hugging Face, LangChain).
• Have experience building recommendation or personalization systems using behavioral or text-based data.
• Are experienced with fine-tuning and evaluating LLMs, and understand their limitations, safety, and interpretability.
• Have worked with text or conversational datasets, ideally in healthcare, coaching, or behavioral settings.
• Are motivated by zero-to-one challenges — defining frameworks, building new systems, and driving measurable impact.

• This role has the option to be in-person/hybrid in NYC, or fully remote depending on candidate location
• The expected base pay range for this position is $225,000–$275,000, based on qualifications and experience
