Muck Rack is growing quickly, and to continue to scale our operations we’re looking for a proactive and process-driven VP of Business and Legal Affairs

As our first ever in-house legal counsel you will have the opportunity to develop and streamline the company’s legal and related operational processes across the business.  The ideal candidate will be an attorney with in-house counsel experience (preferably at a SaaS business) and have an extensive background with commercial contracts and data privacy. The position will report to  the CFO and be the primary in-house advisor on legal matters while having broader exposure to other parts of the business.

What you'll own:

Negotiating Customer Contracts: 

  • Partner with our sales team to facilitate the timely closure of transactions while minimizing risk exposure
  • Provide counsel on existing agreement templates and draft amendments or new templates as required
  • Be the point person for managing compliance with agreements as necessary

Negotiating Vendor Contracts:

  • Collaborate with business units to negotiate contracts and agreements
  • Design policies and processes for efficient vendor contracting, including management of data privacy requirements

Advising on Data Privacy and IP:

  • Be the in-house advisor on data privacy regulations and compliance, working closely with our technology security team, Editorial team and other parts of the organization on the legal and operational implications of data privacy
  • Advise on privacy policies and practices and implement required new practices
  • Evaluate use and protection of trademarks and copyrights, and advise on appropriate action, working with outside counsel as necessary
  • Track and manage contracts for data privacy and security notification requirements

Managing Additional Legal Matters:

  • Build the legal foundation and provide counsel on a broad range of topics 
  • Manage additional areas of compliance including insurance, registrations and similar matters
  • Identify the need for, and participate in the definition and development of policies, procedures and programs which address areas of risk and ensure compliance with the law
  • Assist the CFO in evaluation and satisfaction of other legal matters as required
  • Engage and oversee work of outside counsel

More about you:

  • 5+ years of relevant legal experience, JD from an accredited law school required
  • Member of NY State Bar or have experience practicing under NYS law
  • Excellent working knowledge of commercial contract negotiation practices, especially in the SaaS industry
  • Previous in-house experience (especially at SaaS business)
  • Strong knowledge of intellectual property, data privacy and contract law, either from experience or IAPP certification
  • Highly collaborative and able to organize and manage projects across multiple teams
  • Quick learning self-starter with an ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience using SaaS workflow tools such as Slack, Hubspot, Google Workspaces
