Healthcare should work for patients, but it doesn’t. In their time of need, they call down outdated insurance directories. Then wait on hold. Then wait weeks for the privilege of a visit. Then wait in a room solely designed for waiting. Then wait for a surprise bill. In any other consumer industry, the companies delivering such a poor customer experience would not survive. But in healthcare, patients lack market power. Which means they are expected to accept the unacceptable.
Zocdoc’s mission is to give power to the patient. To do that, we’ve built the leading healthcare marketplace that makes it easy to find and book in-person or virtual care in all 50 states, across +200 specialties and +12k insurance plans. By giving patients the ability to see and choose, we give them power. In doing so, we can make healthcare work like every other consumer sector, where businesses compete for customers, not the other way around. In time, this will drive quality up and prices down.

Our Zinternship is a longstanding program where we provide rising technologists with mentorship, real project work, and the opportunity to give power back to the patient! Our ML intern will work on our recent ML/AI products and features, driving real impact in an emerging space. Some of our best employees are former Zinterns, and you’ll have the opportunity to learn and work alongside them.

What to Expect…
- Before you start, you’ll be linked up for an intro call with members of the Zinternship committee, our recruiting team, and your fellow Zinterns. We want you to come in comfortable and excited!
- You’ll kick off your summer by virtually attending ZocU. ZocU is a week-long immersive engineering class where you will be introduced to commonly used technologies, Zocdoc’s internal tooling, and emerging trends in AI, Machine Learning (ML), or Data Science.
- You’ll learn software engineering best practices like how to write clean, readable code, push code on a daily basis in a CI environment, and ensure code reliability using industry-standard testing frameworks.
- You’ll begin to become fluent in our tech stack, from languages like Python, Scala, and C# to modern libraries like React and cloud computing services like AWS. Soon, you’ll gain exposure to AI/ML frameworks such as Spark/Pyspark, Databricks, LightGBM, Tree models, and XGBoost. Additionally, you’ll work with LLMs from Anthropic, OpenAI, and Cursor IDE
- In addition to working in a real production environment, you’ll also be assigned a project to work on. This project will be both something that benefits Zocdoc and gives you a hands-on immersive education in AI-driven solutions, machine learning applications, or data science analytics.
- You’ll be building products or features that have real-world impact and are directly suited to your interests (think optimizing the workflow for iOS/Android mobile experiences, developing predictive analytics for patient scheduling, or driving our microservice architecture forward in Scala).
- You’ll cap off your Zinternship by presenting your summer project to our entire technology and leadership team at the end of your internship (when your internship is sadly wrapping up).
You’ll be successful in this role if you have…
- Begun pursuing your Masters with a focus on ML, AI, or Data Science
- A sound understanding of computer science fundamentals like data structures and algorithms, and the ability to implement these concepts in everyday engineering.
- Experience writing clean code in an object-oriented or functional programming language of your choice (it’s true, we don’t care which you use!).
- An eagerness to immerse yourself in Zocdoc tech, problem-solve daily, and be challenged to grow every day.
- Familiarity with machine learning concepts such as supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, or NLP, and experience working with AI/ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn.
- Exposure to data science techniques, including data preprocessing, feature engineering, and statistical analysis using tools like Pandas, NumPy, and Matplotlib.
- Understanding of cloud computing and distributed systems, including working with AWS, GCP, or Azure for deploying ML models and data pipelines.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively discuss even the smallest nuance of your code or ML model with your scrum team.
- An infectious commitment to engineering and an enthusiasm for working on a product that is revolutionizing healthcare.

Base salary offered is determined by a number of factors including the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and skills. Certain positions are also eligible for variable pay and/or equity; your recruiter will discuss the full compensation package details.
