Role Overview

We are seeking a Managing Editor to oversee the daily editorial strategy and content creation for Criminally Obsessed, with a strong social-first mindset. This mid-level role is ideal for an editorial lead who is deeply immersed in true crime, understands what performs on social platforms, and is excited to be hands-on in shaping and producing content.

The Managing Editor will guide stories from ideation through execution with particular attention to how content is packaged, presented, and optimized for social audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily editorial strategy for Criminally Obsessed, with a strong emphasis on social-first storytelling
  • Assign, supervise, and review production of breaking news post, story-driven carousels, and in-depth short and midform video content
  • Develop and refine story ideas with social performance in mind, from headline and hook to visuals and pacing
  • Ensure content is optimized for all major social platforms, with a particular focus on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts.
  • Manage editorial calendars, deadlines, and production workflows
  • Maintain consistency in brand voice, tone, and visual identity across platforms
  • Apply best practices for social publishing, including thumbnails, captions, metadata, and trends
  • Monitor performance metrics and audience engagement to inform editorial decisions
  • Uphold editorial standards, accuracy, and ethical considerations in true crime storytelling

Required Qualifications

  • Strong passion for and knowledge of true crime content
  • 7+ years experience writing and producing digital editorial content
  • Hands-on experience producing or overseeing asset creation
  • Demonstrated understanding of social media best practices across platforms, especially Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Solid understanding of creative development and storytelling across formats
  • Keen eye for visual design and presentation
  • Strong editorial judgment and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working at a digital media, entertainment, or social-first brand
  • Familiarity with social analytics and audience insights
  • Experience collaborating with or managing freelance or staff contributors
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, trend-driven environment

The base salary compensation range for this role is $97,500 to $130,000. In addition, this role may be eligible for a discretionary quarterly bonus, which would be awarded based on individual and company performance. Final compensation for this role will be determined by various factors such as a candidate’s relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and geographic location. Full-time positions are eligible for benefits that include participation in a retirement plan, life and disability insurance, health, dental and vision plans, flexible spending accounts, 15 paid vacation days, 2 paid personal days, 9 paid holidays, 40 hours of paid sick leave, parental leave, and employee stock purchase plan.
