Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. It empowers creators with financial autonomy, ownership, and a direct connection to their communities. Substack's model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of independent publishing and is revolutionizing culture.

As a Marketing Manager on the Creator Marketing team, you’ll lead initiatives that drive creator acquisition, adoption, and engagement across Substack. You’ll design and execute programs that activate creators, expand reach, and bring new subscribers into the network. Working closely with Partnership Leads, you’ll embed within key markets to translate local strategy into scalable creator marketing programs. This is a role for someone who is as comfortable writing a nurture email as they are reading a conversion funnel, and who finds equal satisfaction in a well-crafted subject line and a well-structured A/B test.

The ideal candidate combines strong analytical instincts with genuine creative ability. They care deeply about the creator economy, write with clarity and warmth, and are energized by building programs that scale. They take a rigorous, iterative approach to growth — and they bring a writer's sensibility to every touchpoint they build. This role reports to the Programs Lead, Creator Marketing and is based in New York City, San Francisco, or Los Angeles.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and evolve the creator email lifecycle program — from acquisition through onboarding, activation, and retention — with a focus on measurable impact at each stage.

  • Design, test, and optimize web page experiences that drive creator signups and conversions, working closely with Product and Design.

  • Develop copy and content for lifecycle touchpoints, which could include emails, landing pages, in-product messaging, that is clear, compelling, and on-brand.

  • Use data, insights, and experimentation to optimize program and campaign performance.

  • Partner with the Campaign Strategist and broader Creator Marketing team to ensure lifecycle programs amplify campaign moments.

  • Work cross-functionally with Partnerships, Product, and Data to understand creator behavior and translate insights into programs that improve outcomes.

  • Collaborate with brand communications and editorial to spotlight creators across owned channels and earned media.

Requirements:

  • 4-6+ years of experience in marketing (tech/creator economy preferred). Experience running social media and social ads is a plus.

  • An excellent writer — able to craft email copy, landing page content, and internal documentation that is precise, engaging, and human.

  • Strong analytical skills — fluent in marketing metrics, comfortable in dashboards, and able to turn data into clear recommendations.

  • Familiarity with web optimization, A/B testing tools, and basic conversion principles.

  • A voracious reader and Substack subscriber, with genuine enthusiasm for the creator economy and independent publishing.

  • The ability to work quickly and effectively while managing several projects under deadline.

  • Experience owning an email lifecycle or CRM program end to end, including segmentation, testing, and performance reporting a plus.

  • Strong communication skills — able to present findings, make recommendations, and align stakeholders clearly and confidently.

Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $125,000-$150,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Substack is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, national origin, veteran or disability status. We’re seeking people passionate about enabling independent expression and building a better business model for creators. If you want to see what media, communities, and content can become when unmoored from advertising models, and you have the skills and experience to contribute, we’d love to meet you.
