Public Relations Specialist
Who we are
TransferWise was founded in 2011 with a clear mission: Money without borders - so people and businesses can send, spend and get paid in any currency, whenever, wherever.
Sure, the heart of what we do is international money transfer. And we’re committed to making it instant, convenient and fair for millions of people, all over the world. But we’re growing our other products and our teams at an exciting pace. And we’re looking for the very best to jump on board.
There are over 700 employees from more than 50 countries working for TransferWise. We have nine offices around the world from London HQ to Tampa, FL, to Sydney, Australia. It’s a global community.
What it’s really like to work here
At TransferWise, we do things a bit differently. There’s no corporate nonsense, and no old-fashioned hierarchy. Instead, we work in dozens of self-sufficient, autonomous teams. Think of them like start-ups within a start-up.
Each team picks the problems they want to solve. So there’s no micro-management. No hiding behind fancy job titles. And no one telling you what to do. You are your own boss. But you’ll get tons of guidance and plenty of support from your talented, super-smart team mates.
We’re going to be upfront — the way we work doesn’t suit everyone. But if freedom, autonomy, and life-affirming, head-scratching professional challenges rock your world, we could be a match made in heaven.
A bit about the job
We’re looking for a Public Relations Specialist to join our growing team in New York City.
PR and Communications at TransferWise are about being proud of a product that is changing the world of financial services, and feeling driven to share that with everyone. In our small team, everyone has the opportunity to own important projects that will make a big impact on our brand, and with the support of our content and creative teams, you'll have the marketing programs and resources you need to create truly bold and innovative campaigns. We are a borderless company and you'll work with a borderless outlook too, helping to define PR strategy for multiple international markets. With the opportunity to learn, take on more responsibility and see the world (well, North America and Europe at least), it's a wonder you haven't applied yet.
What will you be doing?
- Working closely with the North American PR manager to help raise awareness of TransferWise in the US and Canada
- Making finance approachable. You’ll brainstorm story angles and campaign ideas to reach new consumer audiences and be responsible for the delivery.
- Constantly meeting journalists, conference coordinators, and other key influencers to expand our network in New York, San Francisco, Toronto and beyond.
- Keeping a pulse on events and speaking opportunities for key spokespeople and the broader US team, in addition to appropriate lists and awards for the brand at-large.
- Overseeing the case study database to ensure we have relevant and engaging stories to tell about the people and businesses using TransferWise.
What skills do you have? What type of person are you?
- You have 2-4 years of media relations experience in the tech or consumer space (in-house or agency)
- You are wildly creative, with a keen intuition for what makes a compelling story.
- You live for that rush of finally nailing that hard-earned piece. You’re relentless in your pursuit of press coverage, from cold-calling journalists to brainstorming new story angles.
- You understand that news moves quickly and flourish in a fast-paced environment. You would sooner have too much on your plate than not enough.
- You are an impeccable writer and editor. You can spot a missing apostrophe from 50 yards. In fact, you’ve already seen (and been appalled by) five spelling mistakes and grammatical errors in this job listing. (Spotted them? Please point them out to us in your application).
- You’ll need to show initiative and take responsibility for delivering your work. You constantly raise your hand for projects, and are excited by the opportunity to execute on your own ideas.
- You take and give straightforward feedback.
Sound right for you?
If so, please submit one piece of coverage that you’re particularly proud of, with an explanation of what it took to nail the piece. What was it you set out to achieve and how did you set about it? What business objective did the story meet for the company? Please also attach your resume.
Applications will close on Tuesday 2nd January.
