About Citi Bike

Bicycle sharing is a convenient, flexible, healthy and fun transportation option that enhances urban livability and mobility. Headquartered in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, Citi Bike is the nation’s largest bike share system. They are responsible for every aspect of the bike share program, from repairing and rebalancing bikes, to maintaining the stations and docking points, to marketing the program and educating people about bike share. By the end of 2017, Citi Bike will be managing a fleet of over 12,000 bikes.

Citi Bike’s parent company, Motivate Co., also oversees additional bike share programs in Boston, DC, Chicago, Bay Area, Jersey City, and Portland, OR.


About the Role

The Deputy GM will work alongside the General Manager to drive revenue and operations performance of Citi Bike in New York City. In this role, you will get exposure to all aspects of our business, including everything from marketing and social media, to physical product engineering and back-end infrastructure.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: conducting sophisticated, data-driven operational analyses on a variety of manpower, technology, logistics, supply-chain and product-related initiatives with large, complex data sets; overseeing major operational efforts occurring across the city; overall management of key initiatives; and otherwise ensuring all safety, operational, and performance standards are met or exceeded.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work under the direction of the General Manager to ensure Citi Bike meets its business goals.
  • Oversee various improvement initiatives related to training, process, equipment, and staffing.
  • Initiate and complete sophisticated data analyses ranging from physical product, field operations, workflow efficiency, vehicle and facility usage, customer behaviors, and other relevant topics.
  • Maintain a close working relationship with all Citi Bike department heads, to assist with the implementation of strategic initiatives, as well as future planning and budgeting.
  • Work in partnership with all operational department heads to measure and ensure timely and productive workflows.
  • Assist with internal and external reporting as needed.
  • Occasionally travel other systems under Motivate to gather best practices and share our own lessons learned, and to seek out new innovations and technologies to test in New York.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Engineering, Transportation or related field. High proficiency in Excel, Word, Microsoft Project, Google Applications, and ability to learn new software.
  • Minimum 7 years total experience, including at least 3 years of hands-on experience in an operational role. Must have proven experience managing large operations teams.
  • Understands basic concepts of engineering, product development, and corporate accounting.
  • Can quickly get up to speed on Citi Bike’s software, physical engineering, mobile application, marketing initiatives, customer service, and financials.
  • Demonstrable experience working on complex data analyses with messy data sets, which result in actionable insights.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent sense of humor.
  • Ability to report to work at Citi Bike HQ office in Brooklyn, NY and field locations as needed.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Advanced degree in Business, Engineering, or related field a plus.
  • Logistics, field/warehousing, and/or supply chain experience a plus.
  • Operations or Strategy consulting background a plus.
