The Product Counsel will oversee legal intake, contracts, compliance workflows, and provide legal guidance on product decisions, particularly in AI law.

Whether in sales, project management, marketing, operations, or product development, Fireflies is revolutionizing team collaboration by capturing knowledge, automating repetitive tasks, and enhancing productivity before, during, and after every meeting.
Recognized as a category-defining platform, Fireflies has achieved unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. Ramp named Fireflies the 6th most popular AI platform, joining the ranks of OpenAI, Midjourney, and Anthropic. Chances are, you've already seen Fireflies in action quietly powering one of your recent meetings.
We're hiring our first in-house Product Counsel to turn Fireflies' legal function into a source of strength — owning legal intake, contracts, compliance, and AI regulatory guidance while working closely with Product, Engineering, Security, Sales, and outside counsel. This is a high-ownership, build-from-scratch role for someone who is as fluent in product and technology as they are in the law.
How we like to start: This is a full-time role from day one, with a 60-day onboarding/probationary period to confirm mutual fit.
Requirements at a glance: A JD and active bar admission are required for this role. We're looking for someone who can operate as a solo legal function without a senior lawyer to lean on internally, and who is genuinely energized by unsettled AI legal questions (consent, background recording, biometrics, AI liability).
Inbound Legal Triage & Litigation Support (incl. Subpoenas)
- Serve as the first point of contact for subpoenas, depositions, and civil/government inquiries.
- Build and document the subpoena intake → triage → outside counsel coordination process.
- Maintain a simple internal tracker so stakeholders always know status and next steps.
- Actively support active litigation matters — coordinating with outside litigation counsel, tracking case status, and helping shape strategy where appropriate.
Contracts & Deal Support
- Review, draft, and negotiate NDAs, MSAs, SOWs, DPAs, and strategic partnership agreements.
- Maintain a lightweight playbook (preferred clauses + fallbacks) to increase deal velocity.
- Align legal positions with product architecture, AI feature sets, and privacy/security commitments.
Compliance
- Build a clear understanding of Fireflies' compliance stance (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001) and identify where it needs to be strengthened.
- Partner with Security to keep compliance documentation (e.g., DPAs, Vanta artifacts) current. Note: customer security questionnaire responses are largely automated today, so this role is not expected to own questionnaire completion — it focuses on keeping the underlying legal positions accurate.
Product Law & AI Regulatory Guidance
- Advise on product decisions with legal implications (e.g., desktop apps, background recording, consent flows).
- Stay ahead of the AI note-taker legal landscape (recording, biometrics, consent, AI liability).
- Keep key legal documents current as the product evolves (Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, DPA, Business Terms, etc.).
Cross-Functional Partnership
- Translate technical realities (data flows, encryption, AI model usage, storage) into clear, defensible contract language.
- Help Sales, Marketing, Product, and Security teams handle compliance requests and customer trust conversations well.
Escalation & Outside Counsel Management
- Know the boundary of your own competence — document clear criteria for what goes to outside counsel vs. what's handled in-house.
- Active JD and bar admission required.
- 4–6+ years' experience in commercial contracts and/or AI law, preferably in SaaS or AI technology.
- Strong technical fluency — able to read architecture docs, understand APIs and data flows, and converse with engineers about system design.
- Experience with data privacy, AI ethics, and compliance frameworks (e.g., GDPR/CCPA/BIPA, SOC 2).
- Litigation exposure — experience handling or closely supporting litigation matters is a strong plus (e.g., background at a tech-focused firm like Cooley, Fenwick, Gunderson Dettmer, or Goodwin that handles both transactional and litigation work).
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently — comfortable owning redlines and legal judgment calls without a senior lawyer internally, while knowing when to escalate.
- Exceptional negotiation, writing, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup with high autonomy.
- You'll be Fireflies' first in-house legal hire, with real ownership and leverage via automation.
- You'll work on unsettled, high-impact AI legal questions — consent, background capture, biometrics, AI liability.
- You'll sit at the intersection of legal, engineering, and product strategy — not just reviewing contracts, but designing the systems that make the process faster and smarter.
- Full-time from day one, with a 60-day onboarding period built in to make sure it's the right fit for everyone.
- Internal legal intake → resolution process documented and live by day 30.
- Contract/deal support playbook exists, with this role as DRI for redlines, by day 30.
- Compliance stance understood by day 30, with an augmentation plan by day 60.
- Legal review embedded in the product launch process for consent/recording-sensitive features.
- Escalation criteria (outside counsel vs. in-house) documented by day 90.
- Sales, Marketing, Product, and Security teams feel supported and accelerated by legal — assessed via pulse survey at day 90 and 180.
- You are a great communicator and champion of our culture. Take a look at our culture document
- Customer trust and security-first thinking.
- Fast, incremental iteration and automation wherever possible. Adopts new AI tools (Harvey, Perplexity, etc).
- Accountability, initiative, and continuous learning (aim for 10% better every week).
- Candid feedback and a results-first mindset.
- Impact-chasing over title-chasing.
- Location: Remote — USA
- Base salary: $150K–$220K depending on experience
- Total compensation (incl. equity): $275K–$350K
- Competitive compensation
- Work remotely anywhere in the US
- Ability to move laterally within a team and grow rapidly
- Paid time off and flexible leave policy
- No boss culture
- Flexible working hours
- LGBTQ+ friendly
- Company offsites/virtual retreats
- Tech reimbursements
