About Us

Chess.com is one of the largest gaming sites in the world and the #1 platform for playing, learning, and enjoying chess.

We are a team of 600+ fully remote people in 60+ countries working hard to serve the global chess community. We are here to support 200M+ chess players worldwide with the best possible product, content, and tools to serve the community!

We are a tech company. A gaming company. A content company. And we do it all with passion and commitment to the game. Above all we prize our mission-driven, flat, life-celebrating, no-corporate culture, and we look forward to meeting you and learning more about what you can bring to the team.

About You

You are a meticulous, systems-minded designer that finds joy and comfort in creating intuitive, scalable, design systems that empower Designers and Engineers. Your Figma files are impeccably neat and you sweat the details of your UI design.

You care deeply about discoverability, naming conventions, and the onboarding experience for new Designers and Engineers. You can dive deep into complex auto-layout configurations and write clear, actionable documentation for when, why, and how to use a component.

You see every shared component, pattern, and guideline as an opportunity to support the Design and Engineering team and help everyone build a cohesive and well-crafted product experience.

What you'll do

  • Contribute to Chess.com’s Design System by crafting and documenting UI components and design patterns that scale across our web and mobile platforms.
  • Partner closely with our Design System Architect, Product Designers, Engineers, Product Managers, and design leadership to clarify design system requirements and translate them into scalable UI components.
  • Create clear and intuitive design documentation for component and pattern usage.
  • Collaborate with Product Designers and Developers to ensure design-to-code alignment and serve as a primary point of contact for design system questions through Slack and Figma.
  • Help identify and define visual guidelines that will keep our product experience consistent across platforms.
  • Support cross functional teams adopting the design system by holding design reviews and learning sessions.
  • Stay current with industry standards, Figma updates, and design tooling to improve our design system over time.

Preferred Skills

  • 2-3 years of experience working as a Product Designer or System Designer where you contributed to and helped maintain a design system.
  • A portfolio of work that shows a clear understanding of foundational UI design skill, systems thinking, and design system work.
  • A deep understanding of iOS, Android, and web platform guidelines and heuristics.
  • Technical mastery of Figma including auto-layout, variables, crafting scalable components, variants, library management, and version control.
  • Familiarity with frontend development and how design translates into code for the web and mobile apps.
  • A keen eye for details and pattern recognition to help identify reusable designs and inconsistencies.
  • Experience with accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that allow you to document and explain design system usage to a remote, globally distributed team.
  • Diplomatic guidance and feedback delivery to support and encourage design system adoption without friction.
  • A sense of ownership, pride, and responsibility for your craft.

Bonus Points For:

  • A love for the game of Chess and knowledge of our product.
  • Design engineering or frontend development experience on web, iOS, or Android.
  • Experience using AI tools like Cursor and Claude Code to manage design system codebases.
  • Familiarity with MCP Servers for design systems.
  • Experience creating custom Figma plugins.

About the Opportunity

  • This is a full-time opportunity
  • We are 100% remote (work from anywhere!)
