Role Profile

Position: Product Specialist

Job Location: Remote – Must be based in the Eastern US Region (any state East of the Mississippi)

Job Type: Full-Time

Status: Exempt

Summary of the Role

The Product Specialist expands relationships with existing customers by directing and supporting collaborative sales efforts to grow one or more assigned product lines in one or more assigned end markets. The Product Specialist will assist Account or Strategic Account managers with closes on qualified customer opportunities, while actively collaborating with these team members. The Product Specialist works on the technical development of products, identifies business opportunities for products, and maintains awareness of competing products and market activity.

Reporting to the Director, Strategic Accounts, the Product Specialist is responsible for achieving sales targets in the assigned product lines and/or end markets, and for supporting the product-line success of an assigned team of Branches. 

The Product Specialist provides product technical support for customers, Account Managers, and Branches. Advanced product knowledge and good problem-solving skills are required for this position. The Product Specialist may be requested to engage in activities such as classroom training, on-site training, product application, or to participate in company events such as product launches.

Responsibilities

  • Must maintain 100% commitment to safety policies and procedures

  • Supports the success and sales of the product business unit, of assigned geography or Branches and associated Account Managers, and Strategic Account customers.

  • Meets assigned targets for profitable sales growth in assigned product lines.

  • Provides product training and professional development to area account managers and inside sales representatives in order to enhance their product knowledge.

  • Lead demand-generating activities in the assigned market for the assigned product specialty.

  • Establish productive, professional relationships with key associates in assigned territory and customer accounts.

  • Coordinate the customer involvement of other company associates when needed, including support resources, purchasing, and management.

  • Recommends the application and function of products by reviewing product specifications and requirements and evaluating new product ideas.

  • Assesses market competition by comparing the company's product to competitors' products.

  • Assesses market activity by calling on customers with account managers and evaluating sales call results.

  • Provides product or end market training to improve product knowledge and grow sales.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through continuing education; reviewing professional publications; and participating in industry groups.

  • Perform other duties as trained and qualified for.

  • Manage and communicate with cross functional teams

  • Manage product-related support, feedback and inquiries from customers

  • Coordinate market research to track customer feedback

Minimum Qualifications

  • 4-year College degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience

  • Minimum 6 years of sales experience in a business-to-business, large/strategic customer segment; or a record of achievement in the Account Manager position

  • Product certification or equivalent technical credential

  • Reliable transportation is a must

  • Ability to travel 60%+ as required, including overnight travel

  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as required 

  • Background checks and drug screening may be required (by Company, Customer or DOT requirements in working on-site and operating equipment as required or permitted by law)

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

This role includes a mix of office and field environments. A minimum of 60% of your work week will be spent in the field visiting customer sites, which may include warehouses, industrial facilities, or construction environments. Customer site visits may involve exposure to varying environmental conditions such as noise, temperature changes, or dust. The office environment may require using standard office equipment (such as computers, phones, and printers). Reasonable accommodations are available to support individuals with disabilities in performing the essential functions of this role.

  • Ability to work in a stationary position for extended periods of time.

  • Frequent operation of a computer, keyboard, mouse, and other standard office equipment.

  • Ability to travel to customer locations and job sites as needed, which may involve driving or other modes of transportation.

  • Ability to move freely throughout the job site, including on occasional uneven surfaces, for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders or stairs, as required.

  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions and safety procedures.

  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English

  • Ability to comprehend documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, inventory sheets, and procedure manuals.

  • Occasional exposure to warehouse or shop floor environments, which may include noise, dust, and varying temperatures.

  • May involve occasional handling of products, samples, or materials when assisting with customer orders.

  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed footwear, hearing protection, or hard hats, depending on task or site conditions.
