Job Description

Penguin Random House Corporate Bookmaking is seeking a Production Editor to support the Penguin Random House Christian division, working with the WaterBrook, Multnomah, Align Insight, Forum Books, and Image imprints. Notable PRH Christian authors include Michael Todd, John Mark Comer, Melanie Shankle, Robert F. Prevost (now Pope Leo XIV), Faith Eury Cho, Annie F. Downs, Joshua Becker, and many more. Reporting to the Executive Managing Editor/Copy Chief, the Production Editor will work on a variety of products, including hardcover and trade paperback titles. 

The Production Editor will work closely with the editorial, design, managing editorial, and production groups, and will be responsible for handling a variety of titles, including some hardcover-to-paperback conversions but mostly original titles (including some 4-color), from manuscript to bound book. The deadline-oriented team player will supervise the work of freelance copy editors, cold readers, proofreaders, sluggers, and indexers while providing their production editorial expertise during all phases of production, from copyedit to complete printed books and e-pub files. Ability to pivot quickly and accelerate schedules when needed is essential.  

We are looking for a detailed, meticulous self-starter who has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The ideal candidate will manage a diverse set of responsibilities efficiently and effectively and is comfortable asking for help when needed.  

The Role: 

  • Works with editors and authors to ensure the best quality book is produced, starting with the copyedit 
  • Responsible for scheduling and assigning work to freelance copy editors, cold readers, proofreaders, and indexers as needed 
  • Reviews freelancers’ work and authors’ changes and inputs corrections into electronic Word document or Adobe Acrobat PDF 
  • Interacts with authors to ensure queries are answered and the final product meets the expectations of the authors, editors, and publisher. This includes using discretion to know when to query the editor first. 
  • Manages own list of production editorial work, as assigned by the Copy Chief. This work may include additional copyediting, cold reading, or proofreading 
  • Helps ensure books stay on schedule and error-free through all stages of production, often under tight deadlines 
  • Ensure consistent house style and use the Chicago Manual of Style 18th Edition, as needed 
  • Reviews e-pub files before they are finalized 
  • Proofread cover copy, jackets, bound galley and ARE covers, back ads, and reprint corrections 
  • Codes/Tags manuscripts for design, typesetting, and e-pubs 
  • Resolves production editorial problems under supervision of the Managing Editor/Copy Chief 
  • Works in close conjunction with editorial, managing editorial, design, and production to help create timelines and troubleshoot project-related concerns and issues 
  • Provide feedback to freelancers as needed 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required 

Qualifications

  • Comprehensive understanding of Christian theology and Bible scripture is essential 
  • A minimum of 5 years of trade publishing experience in production editorial, including freelancing  
  • Exceptional copyediting and proofreading skills 
  • Outstanding ability to prioritize in a deadline-driven environment; excellent time management skills, and the ability to accommodate quickly shifting schedules and deadlines  
  • Working knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style 18th Edition and Merriam-Webster 12th Edition 
  • Very detail-oriented, with strong communication and writing skills 
  • Enjoys working independently but can collaborate with internal and external stakeholders when needed 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word (especially the track changes function) and Adobe Acrobat PDF markup  
  • Expertise with FileMaker Pro is a plus  
  • Experience working with 4-color art preferred

This position is open to remote.
