WPIX has an immediate opening for a reporter. The successful candidate is a dynamic, editorially driven journalist responsible for originating, developing, producing, and delivering high-impact news content across television, digital, streaming and social platforms. This role demands strong enterprise skills, a deep roster of contacts, on‑air authority, digital fluency, and the ability to operate independently in a fast‑paced, competitive newsroom serving the most diverse and demanding audience in the country.
The ideal candidate is equal parts storyteller, journalist, and content producer—someone who can break news, add context, and elevate daily coverage with depth, accuracy, and urgency.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
News Gathering & Story Development
- Pitch, develop, and report compelling enterprise and breaking news stories that matter to the New York metropolitan audience.
- Cultivate sources across beats such as government, public safety/crime, business, transportation, housing, health, and culture.
- Research, verify, and contextualize complex topics quickly and accurately.
- Evaluate and pursue leads, tips, and data to create original reporting.
Reporting, Writing & Production
- Write clear, accurate, conversational scripts tailored for broadcast and digital platforms
- Determine story focus, structure, tone, and length under tight deadlines
- Collaborate with producers, editors, photographers, and digital teams to execute coverage plans
- Field-produce stories, including setting up interviews and coordinating logistics
On-Air Presentation
- Deliver authoritative, engaging live and recorded reports across newscasts.
- Cover breaking news live in the field with clarity, composure, and sound editorial judgment.
- Conduct compelling interviews that drive storytelling and accountability.
- Present active live shots that take advantage of the surrounding environment and create compelling, interest-grabbing reports.
- Capable of substitute anchoring.
Digital & Audience Engagement
- Create content for digital platforms, including web stories, and maintain a robust social media presence.
- Produce and appear in social-first video formats where appropriate.
- Engage with audiences responsibly on social media, helping extend reporting beyond the newscast.
- Pilot and host a unique CTV (digital) show of specific interest to people living in the tri-state region.
Editorial Standards & Collaboration
- Uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, fairness, and accuracy.
- Apply ethical decision-making and sound legal judgment in all reporting.
- Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to long-term planning.
- Collaborate across departments to execute major coverage initiatives and special projects.
- Contributes to a respectful, collaborative, and inclusive newsroom environment.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Significant professional reporting experience, preferably in a large or major market.
- Proven ability to handle breaking news, live reporting, and enterprise storytelling.
- Strong writing, interviewing, and storytelling skills.
- Confident, credible on-air presence.
- Solid understanding of multiplatform news production.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently under deadline pressure.
- Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Must be a member of AFTRA or willing and eligible to join.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience reporting in a complex, diverse, and highly competitive media market
Proficiency with non-linear editing tools and newsroom systems
Experience using data, public records, or investigative techniques in reporting
Fluency in a second language relevant to the New York market
Salary
$150,000 annually
