The primary function of the Risk Consultant is to provide proactive, data-driven risk management consultative services, guidance, education, and expertise to physicians, practices, hospitals, and other clinicians insured by Coverys. This is an active rather than a passive approach. It requires experience in – and understanding of -- complex healthcare-delivery settings, strong familiarity with malpractice data (as well as other data sets), the ability to interpret the significance of the data, highly developed risk assessment skills, and broad knowledge of patient safety models, concepts, and practices that are highly responsive to the drivers of malpractice risk. To be successful in this role, the Risk Consultant must be able to:

Related Duties & Responsibilities

  • Be highly proficient in the use of data, not just in targeting priorities for risk mitigation but also in all aspects of client servicing and risk management resource development.

  • Articulately present and interpret data, to audiences of physicians, clinicians, healthcare administrators, practice managers, risk managers, and other relevant groups.

  • Conduct risk assessments, using any malpractice exposures or trends as a starting point. Then identify preventable risk vulnerabilities that are likely to result in recurring events leading to patient harm. The Risk Consultant will administer these risk assessments in the mode best suited to the needs of the insured entity, e.g., enterprise-wide assessments, focused assessments, physician practice assessments, hospital assessments, specialty-specific assessments, and self-assessments.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders post-assessment to implement risk reduction strategies.

  • Provide expert-level risk management and patient safety collaborative consultation to insured physicians, clinicians, practices, ambulatory centers, and hospitals. These consultations can be delivered through any means available (e.g., on site, virtually, by email, through calls made to the Risk Management Consultation phone line, etc.)

  • Take proactive steps to develop a customized risk service plan for assigned accounts. This plan is based on a full understanding of past exposures/risks combined with perceptions (by the insureds) as to where current risk is most active.

Expectations and Competencies

  • Participates in implementing the goals and strategic plan of the Coverys Risk Management and Analytics Department. 

  • Markets Coverys Risk Management products and services to insured clients and prospective insured clients.  

  • Develops good working relationships with clients to facilitate engagement with risk products and services.

  • Prepares professional reports that include risk mitigation recommendations, loss review, and benchmarking data.

  • Assists clients to implement risk assessment recommendations and offers proactive risk reduction guidance to further mitigate exposures and improve patient safety.

  • Exercises discretionary judgment and utilizes appropriate research/information when acting as a resource and providing guidance, collaborative consultation, and education to insureds.   

  • Demonstrates effective collaboration with core business units such as Underwriting, Claims & Business Development.

  • Participates in relevant professional risk management and patient safety organizations to maintain a regional presence.

  • Engages in continuous development to stay current on risk management and patient safety topics.

  • Provides collaborative consultation and services for clients, based on evidence-based research, best practices, and accepted risk management resources.

  • Possesses the ability to utilize active listening skills to achieve the best outcomes.

  • Delivers powerful presentations using data to frame risk concerns with proactive risk management solutions to minimize related consequences.

  • Documents all client and potential client interactions within defined timeframes, utilizing the appropriate database information location.

  • Develops and updates Coverys Risk Management resources utilizing current and professional resources.  Able to independently research and develop new consulting and educational tools that are proactive, data driven, comprehensive and cutting edge.

  • Must be able to manage diverse and large accounts as assigned with high-level customer satisfaction.

  • Demonstrates the ability to organize, prioritize, communicate, and meet established deadlines.

  • Travels and manages travel schedule so as to maximize efficiency and minimize cost.

  • Understands and follows client and company confidentiality and HIPAA policies.

Education & Requirements

  • RN or Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field required. Advanced degree preferred. Certification in Health Care Risk Management (CPHRM), within the first year.

  • An understanding of healthcare delivery, risk management, patient safety principles and related insurance systems obtained from 3-5 years of collective formal and informal leadership positions in a setting where risk consultative guidance has been actively delivered including:

    • Committee leadership

    • Supervisory roles 

  • Proficient in working with the Microsoft Office and other technology based applications and databases as required:  Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, and Excel. 

Base salary range is $90,985 - $123,095. Individual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors that are unique to each candidate including location, skill set, experience, qualifications and education.
