JOB DESCRIPTION
As a Sample Handler, you will play a key operational role within our Northbrook laboratory by managing incoming samples, maintaining organized storage areas, and ensuring materials are properly prepared for testing. You will collaborate closely with laboratory, engineering, shipping/receiving, and project teams to maintain accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all sample-related processes. This is a full-time, onsite position based at the Northbrook Lab.

and $52,100 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).

As a Sample Handler, you will play a key operational role within our Northbrook laboratory by managing incoming samples, maintaining organized storage areas, and ensuring materials are properly prepared for testing. You will collaborate closely with laboratory, engineering, shipping/receiving, and project teams to maintain accuracy, compliance, and efficiency in all sample-related processes. This is a full-time, onsite position based at the Northbrook Lab.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage the end-to-end flow of samples, including receiving, verification, labeling, data entry, internal distribution, storage, and final disposition.
- Verify samples against project requirements and promptly communicate discrepancies or issues to the Project Team.
- Maintain compliance with UL Quality, accreditation requirements, and internal process standards.
- Ensure samples are organized, accessible, and ready for test start according to project timelines.
- Provide guidance to internal customers regarding sample returns and shipping instructions via phone and email.
- Support laboratory, engineering, and shipping/receiving teams with general material handling tasks.
- Maintain an orderly, safe, and efficient warehouse and sample storage environment.
- Conduct periodic inventory checks of storage areas and report lost, missing, or damaged samples.
- Assist in identifying and implementing continuous improvement opportunities.
- Train or assist in training new team members as directed.
- Help develop reports, metrics, and documentation related to sample management when required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience in material handling, warehouse operations, laboratory support, or related fields.
- Ability to operate material-handling equipment (e.g., pallet jacks; forklift experience preferred or willingness to be trained).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel; ability to learn database and tracking systems.
- Ability to safely use basic hand and small power tools (e.g., saws, drills) when required.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively with internal teams.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy in documentation and sample tracking.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, bend, reach, and lift/carry items up to 60 lbs unassisted.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in laboratory operations, shipping/receiving, or logistics.
- Experience working with inventory systems or LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems).
- Continuous improvement mindset (Lean, 5S, or similar exposure is a plus).
