Job Title:                    Senior Counsel

This is a hybrid position based in Brooklyn, NY (3 days/week in-office)


Summary

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is the not-for-profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, The City of New York (the City). BNYDC constantly strives to provide an environment in which businesses and careers can take root and grow.

The Senior Counsel will work in-house on various legal matters, including litigation management, corporate compliance, and transactional work. They will join a legal staff consisting of four other attorneys and a legal assistant.


Areas of Responsibility
• Work with BNYDC’s legal staff, claims administrator, outside counsels, and insurers to review and monitor BNYDC litigations and third-party claims
• Prepare required court filings, complying with discovery and other evidentiary requests
• Ensure that BNYDC is properly protected by its own and third-party insurance policies
• Draft, review, and negotiate leases, subleases, and other types of real estate agreements; provide legal support for complex real estate development deals
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, such as construction and consulting contracts, and requests for proposals and other types of procurement offerings
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, contractual commitments and corporate policies
• Advise, both orally and in writing, executives, and middle management on legal issues as they arise
• Anticipate, raise and mitigate potential legal issues which could impact BNYDC and its subsidiary entities
• Prepare for and execute Board of Director and committee meetings
• Performing other legal projects, as assigned

Required Skills and Abilities
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Excellent analytical and diplomatic skills
• Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage outside counsel and consultants effectively
• Strong organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to prioritize workload
• Enjoys tackling novel issues and working strategically and innovatively to solve legal problems


Qualifications
• Degree from an accredited law school
• Active member of NYS Bar
• 5+ years private or public sector experience in law
• Experience in either transactional work or litigation management, insurance, and/or compliance wor
k strongly preferred
