This position is based in Trepp's NYC office which operates in a hybrid work schedule.
The Data Operations Group at Trepp is responsible for creating and maintaining our data pipelines & workflows powering our core Product applications. Being a member of the Data Operations Group allows you the flexibility to learn and hone your technical skills on AWS cloud architectures, orchestration frameworks, databases, and data lake integrations. You will have the opportunity of working with and creating services and pipelines used by teams including Structured Finance Modelers, Technical Research, and other engineering groups including Platform APIs and data science. Trepp’s products focus on data and analytics in structured finance (CMBS & CLO), commercial real estate (CRE), and Banking & Lending. This team works closely with our Product Managers to refine & improve our product features, data capabilities and delivery, along with creating new Product Workflows.
About this role
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will play a critical role in architecting and developing complex backend systems that power Trepp’s core applications. This position demands strong technical expertise and hands-on coding skills to design and implement scalable, efficient, and secure data pipelines. You will set the standard for engineering excellence by writing clean, maintainable code and championing best practices across the development lifecycle, including testing, performance optimization, and production support.
In addition to building greenfield data pipelines and modernizing existing workflows, you will act as a technical leader and mentor within the team. This includes facilitating code reviews, providing constructive feedback, and guiding architectural decisions to ensure high-quality outcomes. You will actively share knowledge through design discussions and technical workshops, helping team members grow their skills and unblock challenges quickly.
As part of your responsibilities, you will evaluate emerging technologies, articulate trade-offs, and recommend solutions that align with business objectives. Your ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders will be essential in driving collaboration and delivering impactful results.
Responsibilities
- Design and Develop Scalable Systems: Architect and implement robust backend systems and data pipelines that support Trepp’s core applications and analytics platforms.
- Champion Coding Excellence: Write clean, efficient, and maintainable code while enforcing best practices in software engineering, including testing, performance optimization, and secure coding standards.
- Lead Technical Decision-Making: Evaluate emerging technologies, articulate trade-offs, and recommend solutions that align with business objectives and long-term technical strategy.
- Mentor and Enable Team Growth: Facilitate code reviews, provide constructive feedback, and guide architectural discussions to help team members improve their technical skills and deliver high-quality outcomes.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Act as a technical liaison, working closely with engineering peers, product managers, and other stakeholders to address requirements and ensure seamless integration of solutions.
- Ensure Operational Excellence: Identify critical infrastructure dependencies, plan upgrades, and implement monitoring, logging, and alerting strategies to maintain system reliability and performance.
- Drive Continuous Improvement: Promote agile methodologies, iterative delivery, and a culture of learning through knowledge-sharing sessions and technical workshops.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer science or in a related field
- 6+ years of experience building data and/or backend software systems
- 4+ years of experience with Python, Nodejs, Java, or Scala
- 3+ years of experience with SQL, AWS and common data services such as RDS, data storage
- Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments
- Knowledge of components within a technical architecture
- Experience with Agile and SDLC, GitHub workflows (or similar) for CI/CD
- Strong understanding of backend application development methodologies
Preferred Skills
- Experience building data pipelines using Spark / Airflow
- Exposure to Infrastructure as Code technologies such as Terraform or AWS CDK
- Understanding of serverless architectures, containers, and modern application development practices
- Familiar with RESTful APIs services and best practices
- Experience working in Financial Services or related industry
Salary Range
- Base salary range: Starting from $165k plus bonus eligible

Workplace Policy
NYC, Dallas, and London office-based positions: Trepp’s offices follow a 3-2 hybrid-working policy with the expectation of in-office work on Tuesday-Thursday and the option to work from home on Monday and Friday.
