The Cut is seeking a Senior Editor, Essays & Columns to help shape and grow our signature first-person and opinion-driven storytelling. This editor will work closely with writers to develop distinct voices, sharpen arguments, and publish essays and columns that feel urgent, intimate, and culturally resonant.

This role sits at the intersection of editing, commissioning, and story strategy — ideal for someone who is deeply attuned to internet conversation, understands how personal writing moves culture, and knows how to guide writers from idea to publication with rigor and care. This editor would work across verticals, have a rolodex of writers on various topics and be obsessively following trending topics from celebrity to politics in knowing what makes a great Cut story.

WHO WE ARE

The Cut, a New York Magazine site, is home to the conversations that matter most to women today — from politics and intersectional feminism to work, money, relationships, mental health and sex — and forward-thinking coverage of fashion and style.

The Cut is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about what’s now, what’s next, and what’s possible.

As a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.

WHAT YOU’LL DO
  • Edit and publish recurring columns and essays, both commissioned and pitched from writers, from early ideation through final copy
  • Help shape and refine the editorial vision for The Cut’s columns and personal-essay ecosystem
  • Manage a rolling slate of stories ranging from mini features (~1,500 words) to longform features (~5,000 words), balancing ambition, timing, and output to ensure a consistent publishing cadence
  • Collaborate with writers to develop strong points of view, narrative arcs, and distinctive voices
  • Closely follow culture trends, celebrity news, politics, etc.
  • Be actively monitoring social media to keep on top of breaking news and current trends
  • Guide writers through sensitive, personal, or complex subject matter with editorial judgment and empathy
  • Ensure essays are timely, sharp, and grounded in reporting, experience, or cultural insight
  • Partner with audience, social, and features teams to position essays and columns for maximum impact
  • Edit quickly and decisively in response to news cycles and cultural moments
  • Track performance and reader response to help inform future assignments and column development

WHO YOU ARE
  • 5+ years of experience editing essays, columns, features, etc.
  • A strong editorial point of view and deep understanding of The Cut’s voice and audience
  • Proven ability to edit personal writing with both sensitivity and structural rigor
  • Experience commissioning and developing writers across different stages of their careers
  • Excellent line-editing skills and sharp narrative instincts
  • Cultural fluency across gender, politics, relationships, work, identity, and internet culture
  • Comfort editing fast-turn stories as well as long-lead, deeply reported personal essays
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple stories at once
