The Capital One Legal Department is seeking an experienced and collaborative corporate/commercial attorney to join our growing Global Payment Network Legal team. In this role, you will serve as a key strategic partner and important voice within the business. This role involves providing essential legal advice and support on a variety of commercial initiatives and debit transactions for the Pulse Network and Discover Network, working closely with business and legal partners across the organization. You will find that the Legal Department is not a "check the box" function but instead, an important voice and strategic partner in all aspects of the business.
About the Role:
The attorney will provide support for the Pulse Network on the US Commercial and Product team. The ideal candidate should have expertise in commercial contracting and banking. This position will have responsibility for:

• Providing expert counsel and strategic guidance across a critical spectrum of areas, including:
  
  • commercial contracting and risk identification and mitigation;
  • debit products, including regulatory overlays applicable to Debit (e.g., Durbin and Reg. II) and debit specific operational considerations (e.g., routing); and
  • Pulse ATM products and global network footprint
• Negotiating and drafting a variety of commercial agreements and providing legal advice on a broad range of matters impacting issuer and acquirer relationships
• Supporting Debit and ATM related new product initiatives and innovation across the Pulse and Discover Networks
• Supporting the development and maintenance of competitive rule sets for the Pulse Network
• Identifying and supporting process improvements to promote agility in legal and related business operations, including contract template improvements

• Partnering collaboratively with other internal counsel and business teams across the enterprise
• Partnering with Risk and Compliance teams to ensure comprehensive support

The successful candidate will have the following:

Basic Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
• Active member in good standing of at least one state bar
• At least 6 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel

Preferred Qualifications:

• 7+ years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel
• Experience with card issuance processes
• Experience in banking

This role is hybrid meaning associates spend 3 days per week in-person at one of our offices listed on this job posting.
The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $200,700 - $229,100 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
New York, NY: $219,000 - $249,900 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
Riverwoods, IL: $182,500 - $208,300 for Sr. Manager, Sr. Counsel
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
