IMEG is hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer in New York, NY (Manhattan office). This role leads design efforts as a project manager or lead engineer for moderate to complex projects and supports delivery of larger, high-complexity projects with limited support from senior staff.


You will provide project direction, engineering solutions, and advice to clients while supporting project management, engineering analysis, design, and implementation oversight of mechanical systems for the vertical building industry. The role also includes working within project budgets, mentoring, and collaborating across functions to meet project goals and client expectations, while advancing high-performance, energy-efficient design aligned with MEP2050 and AIA2030.

What You'll Do


Technical Path

·        Lead design efforts for the analysis of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.

·        Create detailed designs, specifications, and calculations according to code requirements and IMEG standards.

·        Perform site assessments and generate detailed analysis and technical reports.

·        Interact with clients to understand needs, gather project requirements, and communicate technical information.

·        Build and maintain client relationships through professional communication.

·        Provide in-process design reviews and implement quality control processes for mechanical system designs, calculations, specifications, and project correspondence.

·        Provide technical training and mentoring and technical assistance in resolving field issues with limited support from senior staff.

·        Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices, and contribute to research, development, and innovation efforts within IMEG.

·        Prioritize safety and identify and mitigate potential safety risks associated with mechanical systems.

·        Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated solutions and participate in project interviews and presentations.

Project Management Path

·        Coordinate, oversee, and manage projects ranging in size and complexity.

·        Assist Project Executives and Client Executives with design scopes of work, fee calculations for proposal generation, and contract reviews.

·        Create project schedules with targets for milestones and deadlines.

·        Serve as the point of contact for teams and clients.

·        Create monthly billings, submit financial information to Accounting, and update billing projections and estimated completion percentages.

·        Ensure designs follow owner, IMEG, and code requirements, and that milestone deliverables, quality control processes, and construction technical support are completed in a timely manner.

·        Collaborate with design staff and coordinate project scheduling throughout design and construction.

·        Schedule and lead progress meetings and provide meeting documentation.

·        Conduct construction site visits and provide documentation as needed or requested.

·        Respond to and resolve client and construction concerns, manage change orders and approvals, and train, mentor, motivate, and develop client relationships.

·        Advanced proficiency in design techniques, tools, and concepts involved in the production of technical plans and specifications

·        Advanced proficiency in technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems

·        Strong training, mentoring and leadership skills


Project Management Path

Required Skills and Abilities

·        Demonstrated leadership traits in the project management career path; ability to mentor, train, motivate, and lead others

·        Adept in the technical aspects of one’s discipline

·        Mastery of technical and analytical skills including proficiency of principles in thermodynamics, psychrometrics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics relating to mechanical design in HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems

·        Strong training and mentoring skills


Required for Both Paths

Education and Experience

·        Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, required

·        Professional Engineer (PE) License required

·        7 years of experience minimum required, 8 preferred, in the building design consulting industry

·        Ability to sell work and develop client relationships

·        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate in both oral and written communication to individuals or groups

·        Work with a team supporting government, sustainability, and energy projects, as well as technical building systems and healthcare/outpatient facility work.

·        Design HVAC systems, central plants, building automation and controls, and energy recovery solutions.

·        Use lifecycle analysis, rapid energy modeling, and sustainable design practices to support occupant comfort, indoor air quality, and reduced energy consumption.

·        Deliver innovative, high-performance mechanical designs for complex facilities, including hospitals.

·        Contribute to award-winning energy-efficient HVAC design work recognized through ASHRAE Technology Awards.

·        Recent work includes Weill Cornell Medicine Primary Care and Radiology, Healthcare, and Brooklyn Hospital Center Emergency Department Expansion, Healthcare.

State of New York Salary Range: $130,000 - $160,000 per year

The range listed above represents the base pay IMEG reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position in the work location identified above at the time of posting. For positions available in multiple locations, the minimums and maximums may vary based on work location.


Individual compensation will be determined based on job-related factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, knowledge, skills, abilities, and licensure and certifications.

Other rewards may include annual bonuses and stock ownership options.
