With a career at The Home Depot, you can be yourself and also be part of something bigger.

Position Purpose:

The Senior Software Engineer is a hands-on individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and operating the enterprise cloud platform that powers The Home Depot’s internal developer experience. Working within the Tinyhome platform team, this engineer develops and maintains Go-based microservices, drives cloud infrastructure automation, and owns the reliability and security posture of platform APIs and tooling used by hundreds of engineers across the enterprise. This role requires deep experience in backend service development, GCP-native infrastructure, and a strong bias for automation, observability, and secure-by-default engineering practices.

Backend Service Development (35%)
  • Design, build, and maintain production-grade Go microservices — including APIs, aggregation services, pub/sub consumers, caching layers, and data services backed by Google Cloud Spanner and Redis.
  • Contribute to platform APIs (routing, policy, identity, secret management) that serve internal developer-facing surfaces.
  • Write, review, and ship production code via GitHub pull requests with a focus on correctness, testability, and maintainability.
  • Author and maintain Protocol Buffer definitions using Buf tooling; ensure backward-compatible API evolution.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex cross-service compatibility issues; produce detailed root cause analyses and post-mortems.
Infrastructure & Platform Automation (30%)
  • Build and maintain infrastructure-as-code using Terraform for GCP resources including GKE clusters, IAM, networking, and managed services.
  • Own secrets management lifecycle — including migration of workloads from HashiCorp Vault to Google Secret Manager via External Secrets Operator (ESO).
  • Develop and maintain GitHub Actions CI/CD pipelines following secure CI/CD standards (Secure Flow, Wiz scanning, SonarQube, build attestation).
  • Manage Kubernetes workloads and manifests across PR, NP, and production environments on GKE.
  • Operate and improve internal deployment automation leveraging the Galaxy developer platform, including ServiceNow change request integration.
Reliability, Security & Operations (20%)
  • Own production deployments end-to-end: generate change requests, monitor rollouts, validate traffic cutover, and complete post-deployment verification.
  • Troubleshoot production incidents across the platform stack — from GKE pod failures to API gateway timeouts to secrets rotation issues.
  • Remediate CVEs and security violations surfaced by Wiz and SonarQube as part of the standard delivery cycle.
  • Proactively identify and address technical debt, dependency drift, and stale configurations.
Collaboration & Documentation (15%)
  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams to understand platform needs and deliver solutions that reduce developer toil.
  • Participate in code reviews and maintain high engineering standards across team repositories.
  • Author and maintain internal documentation, onboarding guides, and AI-assisted development orientation files.
  • Engage in team standups, sprint ceremonies, and cross-team architecture discussions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 50% Delivery and Execution - Develops, tests, deploys, and maintains software, with a clear understanding of the value the software is to provide; Takes on new opportunities and tough challenges with a sense of urgency, high energy and enthusiasm; Consistently achieves results, even under tough circumstances; Develops test suites (functional, destructive, etc) to enable success, rapid deployment of code to production; Takes a broad view when approaching issues; using a global lens
  • 20% Learns and Grows - Learns through successful and failed experiment when tackling new problems; Actively seeks ways to grow and be challenged using both formal and informal development channels
  • 20% Plans and Aligns - Collaborates with other team members in agile processes; Creates new and better ways for the organization to be successful; Works the Product Team to ensure user stories are valuable, developer ready, easy to understand and testable; Delivers multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences; Adapts approach and demeanor in real time to match the shifting demands of different situations; Relates openly and comfortably with diverse groups of people
  • 10% Supports and Enables - Helps grow junior engineers by providing guidance on modern software development frameworks, and leading technical discussions
