About Pinecone

Pinecone is the leading vector database for building accurate and performant AI applications at scale in production. Pinecone's mission is to make AI knowledgeable. More than 9000 customers across various industries have shipped AI applications faster and more confidently with Pinecone's developer-friendly technology. Pinecone is based in New York and raised $138M in funding from Andreessen Horowitz, ICONIQ, Menlo Ventures, and Wing Venture Capital.

About the Team and Role:

Pinecone's revenue systems are the financial backbone of our company — and right now, they need to be rebuilt for the next order of magnitude. The Experience Platform team is looking for a technical lead to own our billing, metering, and revenue pipelines end-to-end: setting the architectural direction, raising the reliability and scalability bar, and shipping the systems that make sure every dollar of usage is captured, reconciled, and reported accurately.

This is a high-ownership role. You'll be the most senior technical voice on revenue infrastructure, partnering closely with finance, product, and engineering leadership to define what gets built and how. You'll also be expected to bring an AI-forward mindset to the work — not as an afterthought, but as a core part of how you operate. We move fast, we build leverage into everything we do, and we expect this role to help set that standard for the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Set the technical direction for Pinecone's revenue infrastructure — architecture, tooling, and engineering standards for billing, metering, and usage tracking systems.

  • Build and scale event-driven pipelines for ingesting, transforming, and aggregating usage data, with a relentless focus on accuracy, reliability, and auditability.

  • Own integrations with external financial systems and vendor APIs, designing for resiliency against outages, schema drift, and inconsistent data.

  • Create observable, auditable systems with monitoring, alerting, and verification mechanisms that give finance and leadership confidence in the numbers.

  • Bring AI-assisted development practices to the team — use the best tools available and help establish patterns that let a small team move at a pace that shouldn't be possible.

  • Partner with finance, product, and design to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions, and push back when the abstraction level isn't right.

Requirements:

This role requires someone who can operate at two levels simultaneously: hands-on technical execution and strategic architectural ownership. You'll be building, but you'll also be setting direction — and we need both in one person.

You should have:

  • At least 5 years of backend or full-stack engineering experience (Node.js, Rust, Python, or Go)

  • Demonstrated expertise in event-driven system design and distributed systems

  • A track record of building reliable data pipelines for usage tracking, metering, or financial reconciliation

  • Experience with queueing and streaming technologies such as Kafka, Kinesis, or Pub/Sub

  • Strong intuition for RESTful API design and the tradeoffs that come with versioning and backward compatibility

  • Experience integrating with third-party financial APIs and building defensively against inconsistent or delayed data

  • Hands-on experience with at least one major cloud provider (AWS, GCP, or Azure), particularly data streaming, serverless compute, and storage services

  • A bias toward automation and leverage — you reach for systems and AI tooling before you reach for manual processes or elbow grease

Bonus points for:

  • Experience at a SaaS company with usage-based or consumption pricing models

  • Familiarity with financial compliance requirements (SOC 2, audit trails, etc.)

  • Frontend experience with React or similar — enough to own the customer-facing billing experience end-to-end

  • Strong familiarity with a compiled language like Rust or Go

Perks & Benefits:

  • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, vision, and mental health resources

  • 401(k) Plan

  • Equity award

  • Flexible time off

  • Paid parental leave

  • Annual Company Retreat

  • WFH Equipment Stipend
