Benepass is scaling rapidly, and the complexity of our product surface demands senior engineers who can bridge product vision and technical execution. This role exists to own the “zero-to-one” stage — shaping product approach in collaboration with PMs, Designers, and other engineers, defining the right technical strategy, and driving execution to delivery.

This Senior Software Engineer I will be an impact multiplier: leading architecture for initiatives, breaking down large ideas into clear technical approach documents and milestones, and mentoring other engineers while raising our technical bar. While they will contribute across the stack, they will have a heavier focus on backend systems — including our ledger, syncs, decisioning engine, and rules engine — with the ability to dive into frontend (React, TypeScript) work when needed.

• Partner early in product discovery with Product, Design, and engineering leaders to clarify goals, evaluate options, and recommend a technical approach.

• Lead the creation of technical approach documents that define architecture, system interactions, trade-offs, and execution plans.

• Guide teams through execution of agreed-upon approaches, ensuring work is delivered with high quality, precision, and in a timely manner.

• Take ownership of backend-heavy initiatives (ledger, syncs, decisioning engine, rules engine) while contributing to frontend features when needed.

• Bring forward strong architectural ideas, evaluate trade-offs, and influence system direction.

• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to mid-level and senior engineers.

• Identify and drive improvements to system stability, performance, developer experience, and engineering practices.

You will be expected to attend company-wide on-site events three times per year.

Python, Django, Django Rest Framework, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Tailwind CSS, React Native, AWS, Docker.

Product & Architecture Leadership

• Partners closely with Product, Design, and other engineers to translate ambiguous ideas into actionable, valuable solutions.

• Shapes technical direction early in the discovery process, evaluating multiple approaches and trade-offs.

• Regularly authors technical approach documents for complex initiatives, aligning architecture with business goals.

• Ensures architecture decisions balance user needs, speed of delivery, and long-term maintainability.

Technical Excellence

• Designs and implements well-structured, maintainable code in Python/Django and React with minimal guidance.

• Builds robust APIs and UIs that meet scalability, performance, and security standards.

• Experienced in high domain complexity systems — e.g., financial ledgers, multi-system data syncs, rules/decisioning engines — with the ability to identify edge cases and ensure correctness.

• Uses appropriate design patterns and abstractions to reduce complexity without over-engineering.

• Writes automated tests at the right level (unit, integration, E2E) and maintains high coverage.

Ownership, Initiative & Problem Solving

• Operates with a high degree of self-direction, moving projects forward without needing detailed instructions.

• Anticipates edge cases and proactively addresses technical debt.

• Unblocks themselves and others through research, experimentation, and creative solutions.

• Champions improvements in product and engineering practices.

Collaboration & Mentorship

• Facilitates cross-functional alignment during the design phase, ensuring engineering considerations are represented.

• Reviews code for clarity, maintainability, and adherence to standards.

• Mentors mid-level and senior engineers through pairing, feedback, and technical guidance.

• Communicates progress, risks, and decisions clearly across teams.

Execution & Impact

• Consistently delivers on time with work that meets defined acceptance criteria.

• Improves team efficiency by suggesting and implementing process or tooling enhancements.

• Identifies opportunities to improve system stability, performance, or developer experience.

• Contributes to documentation and runbooks that support smooth onboarding and maintenance.

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including full stack development.

• Proven experience shaping product direction and technical approach from early idea to delivery.

• Proficiency in Python/Django, PostgreSQL, and React/TypeScript.

• Strong system design skills, including scalability, performance, and security considerations.

• Experience working on high domain complexity systems such as financial ledgers, multi-system data syncs, rules/decisioning engines, or similarly complex architectures.

• Comfortable with cloud-based environments (AWS preferred) and CI/CD workflows.

• Demonstrated alignment with Benepassʼs engineering values and collaborative culture.

• Passionate about leveraging AI as a force multiplier to deliver high-quality results with greater efficiency.

• Base salary of $195,000 to $215,000 + equity.

Range(s) are subject to change. Benepass takes a number of factors into account when determining individual starting pay, including your expectations, how you interview, peer compensation, and years of experience. We also look at the market data.
