About the Role

Nature Portfolio, a division of Springer Nature, is looking to appoint a Strategic Partnerships Manager to its North American team based in New York. Depending on the level of experience, this could also be a Senior role. The Strategic Partnerships team works with leadership at universities, research institutes, non-profits, and government organizations, selling solutions from our portfolio to help them maximize their impact, raise awareness, promote research excellence, and highlight achievements and areas of scientific innovation.

 

As a (Senior) Strategic Partnerships Manager, you will be responsible for building relationships with senior-level officials at scientific research institutions and with key internal stakeholders to tailor and deliver solutions that meet the customer’s needs and create value – mirroring the goals in the strategic plans of these organizations. Through in-depth, consultative conversations, you will develop both new and existing products and present solutions that meet the growing needs of science research-related institutions, helping them to increase their standing and exposure to the scientific community. Solutions for which this team is responsible in terms of knowledge base and further development include, but are not limited to, Branded Content, digital advertising, events such as Nature Conferences and Nature forums; professional development and career preparedness resources such as Nature Masterclasses; scientific editing services, sponsored products, Nature Research Intelligence, and more.

 

The ideal candidate will have a significant number of years of consultative sales experience, a proven ability to drive new sales and achieve sales quotas, and an understanding of scientific research and the scientific publishing process.  The ideal candidate will have experience working with leadership across academia, non-profits, societies/foundations, government agencies, and/or any research organizations where the goal and mission, in part, is to advance higher education or scientific research. The candidate should be a natural conversationalist with a curiosity for science, people, and problem-solving. A proficiency in large account planning and management, developing new relationships, and excellent communication and organizational, and project management skills are also essential.

 

Responsibilities

  • Meet revenue goals and drive sales growth by expanding the portfolio of customers, products, and markets

  • Quick learner with an ability to thrive in a multi-product environment

  • Liaise with clients and internal stakeholders to create, negotiate and close proposals

  • Work with directors to develop and implement a strategic territory development plan that maximizes both short- and long-term sales goals

  • Be highly consultative: Understand client needs, make recommendations for new ideas, and develop appropriate proposals for products and services that meet identified client needs

  • Develop and maintain awareness/understanding of market, products, competitors, and trends; demonstrate this knowledge when interacting with clients and internal teams

  • Serve as an industry expert, including active participation in the scholarly community, attending industry events, and communicating relevant industry trends and best practices to clients, which ultimately creates demand

  • Develop and maintain close relationships with internal stakeholders in editorial, marketing, production, and technology departments to ensure solutions are executed on time, on budget, and to the customer’s full satisfaction

  • Maintain accurate records of customer data, customer interactions, and key opportunities, regular sales performance reporting, forecasting, and commentary for the territory

  • Commit to continued self-learning, making use of all available tools.

 

Experience, Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of consultative sales experience, preferably in STM publishing’s academic, non-profit, or government markets to senior executives

  • Self-motivated and willing to continuously improve

  • Personable and detail-oriented with strong communication (written and verbal), organizational, and time management skills

  • Excellent conversation and presentation skills, with an ability to quickly establish rapport and effectively react in dynamic, customer-facing situations

  • Proven ability to understand and quickly acquire in-depth knowledge of multiple product lines, carefully analyze customer needs, and fashion bespoke solutions that meet those needs and create value

  • Proven ability to drive new sales, achieve quotas, and increase year-to-year revenue

  • Ability to work on complex contract negotiations and proposal development

  • Strong project management skills with an ability to collaborate within a complex team environment to execute projects

  • Strong computer and research skills

  • Ability to travel as needed

US Annualized Base Salary Range: Strategic Partnerships Manager - $80,000 - $95,000 / Senior Strategic Partnerships Manager - $95,000 - $105,000. This role is eligible for a quarterly sales bonus plan. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level, and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
