Job Description

Site Manager Vanderlande

Job Overview

The Site Manager oversees assigned installation activities in the field and supports the Construction Manager in executing Vanderlande’s approved site plan. The SM coordinates daily work across installation disciplines, checks progress and quality, identifies safety and access concerns, and makes sure field issues are documented and raised promptly.

The SM works within the direction and authority established by the Construction Manager and Project Manager. The role does not carry independent responsibility for project P&L, contracts, claims, customer commercial discussions, or approval of changes to scope, cost, or schedule.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate day-to-day installation activities in assigned work areas across mechanical, electrical, controls, and pre-commissioning teams.
  • Confirm that work areas are ready for installation, including access, materials, drawings, equipment, and required safety controls.
  • Monitor subcontractor manpower, progress, workmanship, and adherence to the approved installation sequence and look-ahead plan.
  • Spend approximately 75% of the scheduled workday in the field, including morning and afternoon walks focused on active work, constraints, safety, and quality.
  • Identify installation conflicts, delays, material shortages, quality concerns, and emerging risks. Document the facts and escalate them to the Construction Manager.
  • Coordinate field interfaces among subcontractors and other trades within the direction established by the Construction Manager.
  • Verify that corrective actions assigned to the field are completed and report unresolved issues.
  • Support quality inspections, punch list tracking, area readiness, and turnover preparation.
  • Observe and reinforce site safety requirements. Address immediate unsafe conditions and report incidents or concerns through the required safety and management channels.
  • Communicate installation material needs to the Construction Manager and Logistics team. Verify that assigned work areas are ready to receive materials without assuming control of logistics personnel or operations.
  • Maintain accurate field notes, photographs, progress updates, and records of delays or constraints.
  • Lead field huddles or coordination meetings when assigned and follow up on actions within the SM’s authority.
  • Provide the Construction Manager with a clear account of actual field conditions, planned next steps, and decisions that require escalation.
  • Communicate with the customer or General Contractor on routine field coordination when authorized, while referring contractual, commercial, and scope matters to the Construction Manager and Project Manager.

Authority and Role Boundaries

The Site Manager may coordinate approved work and raise recommendations based on field conditions. The SM does not independently:

  • Approve changes to project scope, budget, contract terms, or the baseline schedule.
  • Commit Vanderlande to additional labor, cost, acceleration, or subcontractor claims.
  • Negotiate commercial matters with the customer, General Contractor, or subcontractors.
  • Direct the Logistics team or assume accountability for logistics operations.
  • Replace the Construction Manager as the primary site execution leader or the Project Manager as the commercial and contractual owner.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong field leadership and the ability to coordinate multiple installation disciplines.
  • Working knowledge of material handling equipment installation, including mechanical, electrical, and controls interfaces.
  • Ability to read installation drawings, understand work sequences, and recognize conflicts before they affect progress.
  • Sound judgment in identifying safety, quality, access, and schedule risks.
  • Clear verbal and written communication, with accurate and timely reporting.
  • Ability to work effectively with subcontractors, the Construction Manager, Logistics, Safety, Engineering, and the Project Manager.
  • Organized follow-through on assigned actions and corrective work.
  • Professional conduct and steady decision-making under pressure.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience supervising or coordinating installation work on material handling, conveyor, automation, or comparable construction projects.
  • Practical understanding of subcontractor coordination, field safety, installation quality, and project reporting.
  • Relevant craft or technical experience may be considered alongside formal construction management experience.
