The Role

As a Senior GCP Cloud Data Architect – BigQuery, AI, Data Governance & Mesh, you will lead the design, architecture, and implementation of FreshDirect’s cloud-native data platform. This role drives enterprise data architecture, cloud migration, data governance, and AI/ML initiatives across our omnichannel retail ecosystem.

·       Advanced Supply Chain Intelligence through scalable data lakes, real-time inventory streams, and ML-powered forecasting.

·       Customer 360 & Personalization using transactional, behavioral, and preference data to deliver personalized experiences at scale.

·       Real-Time Operational Intelligence with event-driven architectures to optimize fulfillment, inventory, and KPIs.

·       Strategic Data Products via semantic layers, governance frameworks, and Data Mesh principles to ensure reliable, scalable insights.

Your expertise will directly influence how FreshDirect leverages data as a competitive advantage, impacting millions of customers across New York.

Location: Based out of NY/NJ Office

What You’ll Do

·       Design and implement enterprise data warehouse solutions on GCP using BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Dataflow, and other services.

·       Lead cloud migration strategies, including assessment, re-platforming, and phased cutovers to GCP.

·       Drive adoption of Data Mesh architecture, enabling domain-oriented data ownership and self-service analytics.

·       Define and enforce data governance standards (quality, metadata, access, lineage, stewardship) using Dataplex, Data Catalog, or Collibra.

·       Architect and operationalize Vertex AI solutions for ML model training, serving, and eCommerce integration.

·       Build agentic AI systems for autonomous workflows, real-time personalization, and guided discovery.

·       Develop Conversational AI capabilities (Dialogflow CX, LLM integrations) for customer support and engagement.

·       Collaborate with engineering, data, ML, product, and UX teams to deliver scalable AI-powered solutions.

·       Ensure architectures align with business goals, compliance, and performance standards.

·       Mentor teams on GCP best practices, AI/ML deployment, and modern data management.

What You’ll Bring

·       8–10+ years of data architecture experience, including 3+ years on GCP.

·       Deep expertise in BigQuery (performance tuning, partitioning, clustering, cost optimization).

·       Proven experience with cloud migrations from on-prem or other cloud platforms to GCP.

·       Knowledge of Data Mesh principles and enterprise adoption.

·       Strong understanding of data governance, metadata management, cataloging, and access control.

·       Hands-on experience deploying Vertex AI ML solutions, including AutoML, custom models, and MLOps.

·       Experience with Conversational AI, agentic systems, or autonomous workflows.

·       Proficiency in GCP services: Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, Cloud Composer, Dataplex, Looker, IAM.

·       Excellent communication, leadership, and documentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

·       Experience in eCommerce or retail data use cases (personalization, inventory forecasting, customer segmentation).

·       GCP certifications: Professional Cloud Architect, Data Engineer, or Vertex AI Engineer.

·       Familiarity with generative AI, RAG, or LLM fine-tuning.

·       Hands-on experience with data quality, lineage tracking, or real-time observability tools.

Salary: The salary range for this role is from $150,000 - $185,000. Specific pricing for the role may vary based on many factors including but not limited to candidate experience, and skills.
