Straight Arrow News is on a mission to raise the bar in journalism – and delivering world-class digital products is central to that vision. We’re looking for a Senior Technical Product Manager to help us build and optimize the systems that power our subscriber experience, audience insights, and monetization strategies.

About the Role

As a Senior Technical Product Manager, you’ll sit at the intersection of product, engineering, and growth, driving initiatives that span content management, subscriptions, identity, privacy, and syndication. This is a hands-on role where you’ll go beyond writing specs – you’ll actively work within integrated systems to bring features to life and ensure seamless execution.

You’ll collaborate closely with engineering, product, legal, and growth teams to define requirements, manage implementation timelines, and deliver mission-critical systems that enhance user experience and business outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drive the technical design and delivery of subscription and monetization flows across web and mobile platforms, including payment processing and app store in-app purchase systems (Apple and Google).
  • Serve as the technical product lead partnering with design, editorial, and engineering to translate user experience goals and business objectives into concrete system requirements and architecture decisions.
  • Author detailed technical product specifications, API contracts, data flows, and system diagrams; configure and implement features directly within integrated platforms and tools where appropriate.
  • Lead technical integrations across numerous systems including identity/authentication systems, subscription/entitlement systems, content management systems, email service providers, etc.
  • Own and prioritize the technical backlog and roadmap, balancing business impact, user needs, architectural integrity, and engineering constraints.
  • Own the technical operation, configuration, and evolution of third-party SaaS platforms supporting subscriptions, identity, analytics, consent management, and experimentation.
  • Increase engineering velocity by defining precise, testable technical requirements, acceptance criteria, and dependencies, reducing ambiguity and rework.
  • Partner closely with engineering to design and implement end-to-end analytics and tracking solutions, including event schemas for user journeys, conversions, churn, and retention.
  • Define, document, and enforce standards and best practices for user data handling, privacy, and regulatory compliance (GDPR, CCPA), working directly with data models and consent frameworks.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience as a Technical Product Manager with direct ownership of DTC subscription products, including acquisition, conversion, billing, renewal, and retention across web and/or mobile platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience operating in subscription-driven businesses where product decisions are tightly coupled to revenue, churn, and lifecycle metrics.
  • Strong technical understanding of digital analytics and event instrumentation (e.g., Google Analytics, Amplitude), including data layers, tagging strategies, and KPI definition for subscription funnels.
  • Deep familiarity with consent management platforms, user privacy frameworks, and regulatory compliance (GDPR, CCPA), including hands-on involvement in implementation and enforcement.
  • Hands-on experience integrating and managing customer identity and authentication systems, including OAuth and OpenID Connect–based social sign-on and customer IAM platforms (e.g., Auth0, Firebase Auth).
  • Proven track record partnering with engineering to design and implement subscription billing and payment systems, including credit cards, app store in-app purchases, and related backend workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical specifications and explain complex subscription, identity, and data systems to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building or scaling DTC subscription products in a media, publishing, or content-driven environment.
  • Familiarity with customer data platforms (CDPs) such as Segment or mParticle, as well as data warehouses and ETL pipelines supporting subscription analytics and personalization.
  • Experience designing and running A/B tests and experiments focused on subscription conversion, pricing, onboarding, and retention.
  • Comfort with hands-on technical work, including light scripting, API testing, SQL queries, and debugging data or integration issues.
