Engineering at Valon

We are building a world-class engineering team to automate one of the most regulated spaces in the financial sector - the mortgage and housing industry. We come from companies like Google, Facebook, Spotify, Oscar Health, and Twilio. You’ll join a small, tight-knit group of engineers who are developing flexible backend architecture to accurately handle billions of dollars at scale. In addition, our team of engineers is fulfilling Valon’s mission by creating a great user experience to help homeowners manage their mortgages through a platform that delivers new features quickly and with quality. Our tech stack is built on Python, React, Docker, Kubernetes, and Google Cloud Platform.

Responsibilities

  • Learn new concepts and technologies quickly and apply them to challenging problems
  • Design and build robust and extensible infrastructure to handle evolving and complex federal, state, and agency regulations
  • Dive deep to understand the inner workings of a highly complex industry
  • Work with Product and Design to define the best experience for our customers

Ideal Background

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience building quality software applications at scale
  • Strong communicator
  • Able to work cross-functionally to balance product and technical requirements
  • Great at building scalable systems from scratch with a fast turnaround
  • Experience with one or more of the following: web application development, mobile application development, building large-scale distributed systems, or infrastructure management
  • Time management skills that will maximize efficiency in a fast-paced startup environment

  • Base Compensation Band: $150,000-$265,000. This band spans multiple levels of seniority, which will be narrowed during the interview process.

With stints on Valon’s escrow and investor reporting teams, Hassan Almas now utilizes his domain expertise as the payments team’s tech lead. According to Almas — whose projects include implementing a double-entry accounting system — engineering solutions are all about flexibility. “We have to make sure our systems can adapt to all sorts of unforeseen circumstances. This has definitely challenged me to grow as an engineer,” Almas said.

We aren’t focused on the traditional scaling problems. It’s not so much about how many queries per second we can squeeze out, but more so how adaptable our systems are to real-world problems.

Product Manager
MOVING IDEAS FORWARD
Maintaining the momentum behind big solutions
Hannah Stulberg is streamlining the company’s mortgage assistance application process, aiming to more quickly help out homeowners struggling with their payments. So what helps get products out the door? According to Stulberg, breaking the team into different focuses and product areas provides both speed and autonomy. “This model empowers PMs to fully own an end-to-end product roadmap and product development for an entire business unit,” Stulberg said.

Each product area is granted independence to determine the highest priority problems for that particular business unit and to develop a roadmap for tackling these challenges.
