New York, NYThe New Yorker is seeking a staff writer to contribute deeply reported features, along with essays, commentary, and analysis. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist who can write with rigor, depth, and clarity on a range of subjects and has a demonstrated ability to produce work that is not only timely but also enduring.
Primary Responsibilities:
Report and write features, essays, commentary, and analysis.
Pitch original story ideas and respond to editorial assignments.
Collaborate with newsletter, social media, video, and other digital teams.
Collaborate with editors throughout the editorial process, from story development to publication.
Work closely with copy editors, fact-checkers, legal counsel, and production staff to meet The New Yorker’s deadlines and rigorous standards.
Maintain high ethical standards in reporting and writing.
Additional duties as required by manager
Skills & Qualifications
A track record of exceptional writing across the different forms that The New Yorker publishes.
Demonstrated experience with in-depth reporting, narrative writing, and ideas-driven essays.
An ability to write with originality, clarity, and precision.
Familiarity with The New Yorker’s tone, values, and editorial sensibility.
Comfort working independently, with strong organizational and time-management skills.
Willingness to travel for reporting and respond to news events as necessary.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $115,000 - $150,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
