The New Yorker is seeking a staff writer to contribute deeply reported features, along with essays, commentary, and analysis. The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist who can write with rigor, depth, and clarity on a range of subjects and has a demonstrated ability to produce work that is not only timely but also enduring.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Report and write features, essays, commentary, and analysis.

  • Pitch original story ideas and respond to editorial assignments.

  • Collaborate with newsletter, social media, video, and other digital teams.

  • Collaborate with editors throughout the editorial process, from story development to publication.

  • Work closely with copy editors, fact-checkers, legal counsel, and production staff to meet The New Yorker’s deadlines and rigorous standards.

  • Maintain high ethical standards in reporting and writing.

  • Additional duties as required by manager

Skills & Qualifications

  • A track record of exceptional writing across the different forms that The New Yorker publishes.

  • Demonstrated experience with in-depth reporting, narrative writing, and ideas-driven essays.

  • An ability to write with originality, clarity, and precision.

  • Familiarity with The New Yorker’s tone, values, and editorial sensibility.

  • Comfort working independently, with strong organizational and time-management skills.

  • Willingness to travel for reporting and respond to news events as necessary.

The expected base salary range for this position is from $115,000 - $150,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
